On January 2, Lomira boys basketball defeated Winneconne 79-73 in overtime at home to stay undefeated as the number one-ranked team in Division 4.
Lomira (8-0) got a three-pointer from Charlie Cole to start the game with a 3-0 lead before Winneconne (6-3) sprinted out to a 17-7 lead over the Lions at the 13-minute mark of the first half.
Jake Broeske scored eight points for Lomira during the next five-minute stretch to close the gap at 25-17 before the Wolves ballooned their lead to 31-17, but a Keegan Kell three-pointer started a 7-0 run to put the score at 31-24 in favor of the Wolves.
The two teams traded baskets during the final minutes of the first half, which saw Winneconne go into the halftime break with a 39-33 lead over the Lions.
“I thought we did a good job of fighting back,” said Head Coach Nick Kohler. “We were getting good shots the first eight minutes, we just were not converting.”
The Lions scored the first nine points of the second half, featuring Cole scoring five of those points to give Lomira a 42-39 lead before the Wolves went on an 11-2 run to give the lead back to Winneconne at 50-44.
Cole hit a deep three-point shot, and Maddox Bodden converted an old-fashioned three-point play to tighten up the game at 55-53 in favor of the Wolves.
Winneconne responded with five straight points to expand their lead to 60-53 with less than nine minutes left in this very competitive and high-level game between the Wolves and Lions.
Lomira threw the next big counterpunch when the Lions went on a 14-3 run, highlighted by senior point guard Hunter Duley scoring six important points for Lomira to retake the lead at 67-63 with less than four minutes left on the game clock.
“I think we got the ball inside a little more in the second half and hit shots when we needed to,” said Kohler.
The Wolves weren’t done; they scored the next six points to take a 69-67 lead with one minute left in regulation before Broeske scored the game-tying basket with 40 seconds left to tie the game at 69.
Winneconne took a timeout with 14 seconds left to set up the final play of the game, but their three-point shot at the buzzer bounced off the rim to send both teams to the overtime period.
Lomira got baskets from Cole and Broeske in overtime to take a 73-71 lead before Division 1 Iowa football commit Brody Schaffer stole and dunked the ball to tie the game at 73.
Duley scored for the Lions to break the tie to give them the 75-73 lead with one minute left in overtime before Broeske blocked a Wolves’ shot, and then Winneconne missed a three-pointer, which was followed by Duley knocking down two free throws for a 77-73 lead for Lomira.
Blake Steger’s layup sealed the 79-73 overtime lead for Lomira, with Jake Broeske scoring 26 points and grabbing 16 rebounds, and Charlie Cole dropping 17 points in the Lions’ victory.
“That was a great win, with it being a win I think will only look better as the season goes along because Winneconne is a really well-coached and talented team,” said Kohler.
Lomira boys basketball hosted Omro after print time on January 6, and the Lions will host Oostburg on January 8 at 7:15 p.m.
