The Mayville track and field teams continued their strong spring season with a pair of runner-up finishes during a busy week, placing second at Campbellsport on April 28 and again at the Marshland Invite in Mayville on April 30.
At Campbellsport, both the boys (82 points) and girls (116 points) took second behind Winnebago Lutheran Academy, despite a shortened roster.
“We had a very good meet on what turned out to be a good weather night,” head coach Bob Berry said. “We had some athletes at Sixth-grade Camp and several people out sick, but we still competed well.”
The Cardinals followed that up Thursday with another impressive showing at the Marshland Invite on Parent’s and Senior Night, with both teams again finishing second—this time against a deep and talented Marshall squad. The boys scored 158 points, and the girls brought in a total of 152 pts.
“This is one of the best meets we’ve competed in,” Berry said. “There were some excellent athletes and a very deep Marshall team. We earned 66 medals and had a lot of personal bests.”
Leading the way for Mayville this week were several standout individual performances:
Braxton Wiese continued to shine for the boys, winning the 100 meters (11.82) and long jump (20’2”) at Marshland after placing second in the long jump (19’11”) and winning the triple jump (39’6”) earlier in the week at Campbellsport.
Aubree Koput was dominant on the girls' side, winning the 200 (27.60) at Campbellsport and sweeping the 200 (28.19) and 400 (1:03.85) at Marshland, while also contributing to strong relay finishes.
Emerson Mittelstadt led the boys hurdles and jumps, winning the 110 hurdles (16.70) and high jump (5’10”) at Campbellsport, then adding a high jump title (5’6”) and top-three finishes in both hurdle races at Marshland.
Lydia Case delivered another consistent week, sweeping both hurdle events at Campbellsport (17.71, 53.18) and winning the 300 hurdles (55.52) at Marshland, while also placing in the top three for the pole vault at both meets.
Laila Dobberphul provided a spark in the sprints, winning the 100 meters at both meets (13.46 at Campbellsport and 13.67 at Marshland) and contributing to multiple relay teams.
The distance group also impressed, highlighted by Reed Schmidt’s win in the 3200 (11:34.14) at Marshland and strong relay efforts across both meets, while the girls' 1600 and 3200 relay teams consistently placed at the top.
With depth across sprints, distance, and field events, Berry sees continued growth as the season progresses.
“We’re starting to see a lot of improvement across the board,” he said. “The effort has been there, and the results are starting to follow.”
Mayville will look to carry that momentum into its next meet at North Fond du Lac on Tuesday, May 5, and then on to Waterloo on Thursday. May 7 with a 4:15 p.m. start time.
