Mayville Track Battles to Strong Flyway Conference Finish on Home Track

Posted

Competing under sunny but windy conditions Friday, May 15, at Mayville High School, the Cardinals turned in another strong overall performance at the Flyway Conference Track and Field Meet, highlighted by 34 season-best efforts and several standout individual performances against one of the conference’s deepest fields in recent years.

The Mayville girls finished second overall with 127 points behind conference champion Winnebago Lutheran Academy, while the boys placed fourth with 90.5 points in a tightly contested field.

“We continued to compete very well against some excellent teams and outstanding athletes,” head coach Bob Berry said. “I was especially impressed with the way our seniors stepped up. Every senior on the team had a personal-best performance in one or more events.”

Leading the way for the Cardinals were several top athletes who delivered big performances on the home track.

Neva Mittelstadt turned in one of the meet’s top individual efforts for the girls, winning the high jump at 5 feet while also placing fifth in the 100m hurdles and fifth in the 300m hurdles. Her versatility continued to be a major boost for the Cardinals throughout the meet.

Lydia Case added another strong all-around performance, placing second in the pole vault at 8’6” and runner-up in the 300m hurdles with a time of 52.72. She also helped lead the girls' 1600m relay team to a conference title alongside Sidney Davis, Samara Herzog, and Aubree Koput with a winning time of 4:24.48.

Braxton Wiese led the boys in the jumps once again, placing third in the triple jump (38’4.25”), fourth in the long jump (20’2.5”), and contributing to the third-place 400m relay team. Wiese consistently gave the Cardinals points across multiple sprint and field events.

Mac Livingston continued his strong postseason form in the hurdles and field events, placing third in both the 110m hurdles (16.11) and 300m hurdles (42.37), while also taking second in the pole vault at 11’6”.

Sidney Davis paced the distance squad with a third-place finish in the 1600m (5:46.02) and helped lead off both the conference-winning 1600m relay and third-place 3200m relay teams.

The Cardinals also received key performances from Aubree Koput, who placed third in the 200m and fourth in the 400m, and Laila Dobberphul, who sprinted to second in the 100 meters in 13.48. On the boys' side, Emerson Mittelstadt cleared 6’4” to finish second in the high jump while adding points in both hurdle races and the long jump.

Berry also pointed to the future of the program after seeing several younger athletes compete well under conference pressure.

“Our freshmen and sophomores showed great potential for the future,” Berry said. “They competed hard in a big meet atmosphere, and that experience is important moving forward.”

Mayville now turns its attention to postseason competition at the Division 2 Waupun Regional on Tuesday, May 26, where athletes will compete for spots at the McFarland Sectional on Friday, May 29.
