Mayville wasted no time setting the tone Friday night, rolling to a dominant 48-3 road win over Laconia to protect its undefeated season. The Cardinals improved to 8-0 overall and 6-0 in Flyway Conference play, holding their place atop the standings.
The Cardinals struck on the very first defensive snap when Kevin Keller jumped a pass and returned it 19 yards for a touchdown, igniting the sideline and silencing the home crowd on their Homecoming. Laconia never recovered.
Mayville’s defense only tightened from there. Midway through the first quarter, Laconia lined up for a 56-yard field goal attempt, but Joe Promersberger broke through for a block, ending the Spartans’ best early scoring chance. Later, Owen Steger delivered a crushing sack on the Laconia quarterback, forcing a second-and-34, which became second-and-39 after an illegal shift, as Mayville’s relentless pressure stalled every drive.
On offense, Mayville went to its identity, power football. The Cardinals rolled up 504 rushing yards on 57 carries, wearing down Laconia’s front with wave after wave of backs.
Mayville’s offense found its rhythm in the second quarter and never looked back. Senior back Landen Baker drove the ground game, finishing with 182 yards on 21 carries and a touchdown, repeatedly breaking through arm tackles. Joe Promersberger added 96 yards and two scores on 12 carries, while quarterback Emerson Mittelstadt flashed his speed with 85 rushing yards, including a 42-yard touchdown that broke the game wide open. Tanner Schneider contributed 83 yards and a score late in the third quarter making it 35-3. Dominic Schulke added a 20-yard score with a roughing the kicker penalty on Laconia called for a rekick attempt as the running clock was in effect in the fourth quarter, giving JV players valuable time on the field.
Laconia’s only points came on a 24-yard field goal in the first half. The Spartans finished with negative 41 net rushing yards and 201 passing yards, unable to find the end zone against Mayville’s disciplined front.
The Cardinals finished with 30 first downs, compared to Laconia’s six, and held possession for nearly 35 minutes.
Mayville remains undefeated, continuing to prove its brand of football: physical, patient, and punishing.
The Cardinals will host Lomira (6-2, 4-2) in the annual Milkcan game on Friday, Oct. 10, with kickoff set for 7 p.m. Mayville enters the rivalry matchup as the current holder of the Milkcan.
