Behind a 12-strikeout shutout by Allie Schwirtz, the No. 3 seed Mayville Cardinals opened postseason play with a dominant 5-0 win over No. 6 Westfield Tuesday evening at Ziegler Park.
Mayville jumped out early with three runs in the first inning, capitalizing on defensive miscues and timely base running. Lilian Mansueto reached safely and later took third on a wild pitch, setting the tone for a patient and aggressive offensive approach.
Kate Aumann doubled and scored a run, while Pearl Witek added an RBI single. In total, Mayville collected seven hits and left seven runners on base, adding two insurance runs in the sixth.
Schwirtz was dominant in the circle, allowing just four hits and two walks while striking out a dozen. The Cardinals' defense stayed sharp behind her, committing just two errors and stranding Westfield threats throughout.
With the win, Mayville advanced in the WIAA postseason after a first-round bye, taking on No. 2 seed Laconia Thursday night on the road, which ended in a rain delay with a score of 0-0. Regional play continued Friday night with Laconia winning 6-0 to end the Cardinals' postseason play.
