On May 15, our city was hit by an F2 tornado that caused devastation to many businesses and residents within our city. We estimate around 25% of the city was hit with some kind of damage. I have been in contact with many businesses and residents who were impacted by the tornado. The city is 95% cleaned up as we begin to move forward thanks to the city workers and a large number of volunteers.
So, how do we pick up the pieces, and what can we expect moving forward? The City Administrator has done an assessment of city-owned facilities and has contacted the city’s insurance company with insurance claims, and we are quickly discovering what is covered and not covered. Unfortunately, a lot of outdoor property damage like uprooted trees, cemetery headstones, trees in the river, and clean-up hours are not covered. After speaking with residents, this also holds true for resident properties. I had three elected officials reach out to me to discuss assistance. This included Governor Evers, who toured the affected area with me, Tammy Baldwin’s office, and Representative Mark Born. Residents are wondering about Federal FEMA assistance, however, after speaking with Dodge County’s Emergency Management Director we do not qualify under the criteria.
Wisconsin has a State of Emergency Management Assistance Program that the city applied for in the amount of $380K. Now we need to gather those numbers, and we are asking that all residents that were involved with clean up of their own property or assisted with the cleanup efforts in town to please contact City Hall to register their hours. Please call 920-387-7900.
During my talks with businesses and residents there were many inquiries about starting a fund to help residents in need. After speaking with the City Finance Director, we set up the “Mayville Disaster Relief Fund.” As of today, we have approximately $16K and we are still seeking donations. The City Council will be establishing a criterion over the next month with an application process for residents to apply for some kind of assistance from that fund. More information to come.
I personally want to thank all the residents and businesses that helped in our time of need. First, I want to thank all the residents and volunteers who took the time to come together and help each other clean up the devastation the tornado left behind. I want to thank all the City Employees from Emergency Services, DPW, Parks, City Hall Staff, City Administrator, Utilities Workers, and Tag Center workers. All these departments and city employees gave 150% to help our residents during this challenging time and I want to say Thank You! Job well done.
