Mayville Hosts Berry Invite to Open Outdoor Track Season, Girls Take First

Posted

Under sunny skies and mild spring temperatures, the Mayville track and field teams turned in another strong performance while hosting the Berry Invite on Thursday, April 9, highlighted by a first-place finish from the girls team and a runner-up showing from the boys.

The girls edged out Columbus 133.5 to 130.5 to claim the team title, while the boys finished second with 110.5 points in a competitive field.

“As a staff, we felt this was another excellent meet for us against some very good competition,” head coach Bob Berry said. “We had 35 performances better than last year at this meet, which tells us we’re continuing to move in the right direction.”

The Mayville girls were paced by a number of top performers across events. The 400-meter relay team of Laila Dobberphul, Neva Mittelstadt, Olivia Steiner, and Destiny Giese raced to a first-place finish, while the 1600m relay team of Aubree Koput, Lydia Case, Sidney Davis, and Giese also captured a win.

Individually, Lydia Case continued her strong season, winning the pole vault (8’) and adding a second-place finish in the 100-meter hurdles along with a third in the 300m hurdles. Aubree Koput was another key contributor, placing second in the 400m and third in the 200m, while also finishing second in the high jump.

In distance events, Mette Genz took second in the 3200m, with Sidney Davis adding a fourth-place finish in the 1600m. The 3200m relay team of Davis, Bella Wege, Genz, and Crystall Mueller placed second as well.

Additional strong efforts came from Tiana Canady, who placed third in the shot put and fourth in the discus, and Laila Dobberphul, who sprinted to a third-place finish in the 100m.

On the boys' side, Braxton Wiese and Emerson Mittelstadt led the way with multiple first-place finishes. Wiese won the 100-meter dash and added a second in the long jump, while Mittelstadt swept both hurdle events, taking first in the 110m and 300m hurdles, and also won the high jump.

The boys' 400m relay team of Wiese, Andy Chen, Joe Robson, and Isaiah Gregory turned in a strong second-place finish, while Chen also added a third-place showing in the 100m.

In the field events, Joe Robson placed third in the pole vault, and Colton Carpenter added fourth-place finishes in both the shot put and discus.

Berry also pointed to the growth of the team’s younger athletes and overall leadership as key factors in the team’s early-season success.

“We have several new athletes who are starting to figure things out and will help us as the season goes on,” he said. “Our senior boys and girls have also done a great job providing positive leadership.”

Mayville will look to carry that momentum into the Dodge County Invite at Waupun on April 17.
