Mayville Girls Take First at WLA Quad; Boys Finish Third in Tough Conditions

Posted

Battling cold temperatures and steady winds, the Mayville track and field teams showed grit and depth April 20 at the Winnebago Lutheran Academy Quad.

The girls' team powered to a first-place finish with 84 points, topping Omro (69), Winnebago Lutheran Academy (50), and Laconia (35). The boys placed third with 63 points behind Omro and WLA.

“This was a very cold and windy meet, but I thought everybody competed very well,” head coach Bob Berry said. “We tried a couple of different things on the boys' side that hurt our team score a bit, and the track conditions made things especially tough for our hurdlers. But overall, there were a lot of positives.”

Mayville turned in a number of standout individual performances despite challenging conditions, with the girls' team showing strong balance across all events. Aubree Koput led the girls with a dominant day, winning the 200m in 28.7 and the 400m in 1:04.23, while also clearing 4’10” to take second in the high jump. Sidney Davis was strong in the distance events, winning the 800m in 2:37.64 and contributing to two relay victories, while Meta Genz (6:25.17) and Crystall Mueller (6:32.21) placed second and third in the 1600m, while the Cardinals swept both distance relays, with Davis, Genz, Samara Herzog, and Bella Wege winning the 3200 relay (11:07.29). Laila Dobberphul added a first-place finish in the 100m in 13.74, and Lydia Case won the pole vault at 8’0” while placing second in both the 100m hurdles (18.05) and 300m hurdles (52.98). Aleah Palmer also contributed in the field, winning the long jump at 13’7”.

“The distance runners had a great meet,” Berry said. “On the girls' side especially, we saw several personal bests, which is great to see this time of year.”

On the boys' side, Braxton Wiese delivered one of the top all-around efforts, winning the long jump with a leap of 20’3” and the triple jump at 39' 7", while also running on the winning 400m relay. Emerson Mittelstadt cleared 5’8” to win the high jump and placed second in the 110m hurdles in 17.67. Owen Bronecki led the distance group with a second-place finish in the 800m in 2:15.46, while Mac Livingston added a third in the 110m hurdles (17.95) and a second in the pole vault (11’). In the throws, Colton Carpenter placed second in the discus with a throw of 120’5”, rounding out a strong day of individual efforts for the Cardinals.

For the boys, Mayville picked up first-place finishes in both sprint relays. The 400m relay team of Wiese, Mittelstadt, Owen Bronecki, and Mac Livingston took top honors (47.69), while the 800m relay team of Royze Mueller, Joey Robson, Charlie Gonstead, and Isaiah Gregor also finished first (1:44.84).

Mayville will look to build on the performance as the schedule continues to pick up, traveling to Campbellsport on April 28 before returning home to host the Marshland Invite on April 30 at 4:15 p.m.
