The Mayville girls’ basketball team opened conference play Tuesday night, falling 66–46 to a tough Omro squad. The loss brings the Cardinals to 3–1 on the season after a strong non-conference start.
Mayville struggled to find its footing in the first half, managing just 12 points while Omro built a 27–12 lead by the break. Turnovers and cold shooting plagued the Cardinals early, allowing the Foxes to control the tempo.
The second half told a different story, as Mayville settled in and finally found its offensive rhythm, putting up 34 points after halftime. Despite the improved flow, the early deficit proved too steep to overcome against a disciplined Omro team.
Freshman Ady Christian led Mayville with 12 points (5-for-10 FG, 2-for-3 FT) to go along with two assists. Fellow freshmen Brielle Ehlers and Sophie Budahn each added 11 points. Budahn also turned in a standout performance on the boards with 13 rebounds, including six on the offensive glass, while Ehlers pulled down seven rebounds and recorded two blocks.
Senior Madison Justman led the team with four assists, and sophomore Pearl Witek added two more while taking care of the ball with zero turnovers.
Mayville continued road play on Friday, Dec. 5, traveling to Laconia (1-2), where they fell 80–45 to the Spartans. The Cardinals regrouped quickly for a Saturday matchup at Lake Mills (3-2), battling in a competitive game before coming up just short in a 52–48 final. The back-to-back losses moved Mayville to 3–3 overall to close out the week.
The Cardinals face another busy stretch ahead. They traveled to Central Wisconsin Christian (3-2) on Tuesday, Dec. 9, and then return home Thursday night to host Campbellsport (1-4) in a 7 p.m. conference matchup. Mayville finishes the week on the road Saturday, Dec. 13, with a 2:30 p.m. tipoff at Argyle.
