Mayville Girls Basketball Outlasts Ripon in Double-Overtime Thriller

Posted

The Mayville Cardinals opened their season with a statement win Friday night, outlasting Ripon 59–52 in a double-overtime thriller inside a packed home gym. A full and fired-up student section, decked out in a white-out theme, helped set an electric tone from the opening tip.

Both teams showed some first-game jitters early, with rushed passes and miscommunication leading to sloppy stretches on both ends. Mayville, in particular, struggled to take care of the ball, finishing with 28 turnovers, but the Cardinals repeatedly found ways to recover and respond when it mattered most.

Mayville controlled the first half, taking a 22–13 lead into the break with tough defense and strong rebounding. Ripon surged back in the second half, outscoring Mayville 28–19 to even the score and force overtime. Foul trouble mounted on both sides. Mayville whistled for 27 fouls, leading to multiple players fouling out in the extra periods.

Freshman standout Ady Christian delivered a breakout performance, finishing with 26 points on 7-of-19 shooting, including a three-pointer, and going a perfect 11-for-11 at the free-throw line. She added five assists, stepping up in crucial moments.

Senior Layla Budahn was a force on the glass, grabbing 15 rebounds (five offensive) to go along with eight points, a block, and a steal. Freshman Brielle Ehlers contributed nine points, six rebounds, a block, and a steal. Freshman Sophie Budahn also made an impact with 10 rebounds, two blocks, and a steal.

Junior Reagan Hardesty delivered perhaps the biggest spark of the night, hitting back-to-back three-pointers in overtime to lift the Cardinals when they needed it most. Madison Justman added solid minutes and an assist, while Lydia Case chipped in two points.

Ripon was led by freshman Paisley Spaulding with 16 points, senior Emma Resop with 11, and senior Reese Brooks with 10.

Mayville closed strong in double overtime, outscoring Ripon 12–5 to secure one of the program’s most thrilling season openers in recent years.

Mayville Girls Basketball Rolls Past Lake Country Classical Academy, 87–3

The Mayville Cardinals cruised to a dominating 87–3 win over Lake Country Classical Academy Friday night, improving to 2–0 on the season. From the opening tip, Mayville’s speed, precision, and teamwork set the tone, overwhelming the Sentinels on both ends of the court.

The Cardinals controlled the game from start to finish, and by the second half, the game ran under a running clock as Mayville’s lead became insurmountable. Every player contributed, with the team executing crisp passes, fast breaks, and consistent shooting, leaving Lake Country Classical struggling to find any offensive rhythm.

Looking to next week, the Cardinals travel to Chesterton Academy (15-8, 8-5) for non-conference play on Tuesday, Nov. 25, with tip-off at 6 p.m.
