Mayville Falls in Five-Set Battle at Laconia

Posted

The Mayville Cardinals came up just short in a hard-fought conference matchup at Laconia on Thursday night, falling 3-2 in a back-and-forth five-set match.

After a slow start in set one, the Cardinals rallied to take control in the second and third sets behind strong net play and long defensive rallies. Junior Lilian Mansueto led the Mayville attack with 13 kills, while Leah Vossekuil added nine kills and seven blocks, providing a steady presence at the net. Sophomore Amelia Boeder contributed seven kills, and freshman Brielle Ehlers finished with eight kills and eight blocks.

Setting duties were split between Neva Mittelstadt (19 assists) and Reagan Hardesty (15 assists), who helped distribute a balanced offense across the lineup.

Defensively, Mayville was active across the floor, finishing with 93 digs as a team. Mansueto anchored the back row with 25 digs, while Marissa Vander Schaaf added 23 and Hardesty chipped in 15. Ava Schellpfeffer added nine digs, helping the Cardinals extend rallies deep into the fifth set.

Despite the momentum in the middle frames, Laconia regained control late, taking the fourth set and carrying that edge into the deciding set.

With the loss, Mayville moves to 16-10 overall, 5-1 in conference play, but continues to show depth and resilience as the postseason approaches.

The Cardinals continue conference action on the road on Thursday, Oct. 16, at St. Mary’s Springs (10-18, 3-2) at 7 p.m.
