Thursday, March 13, 2025 - Mayville - Mayville Cares Inc. is kicking off its second major project this week: the restoration of the Fireman’s Field grandstand. Once a centerpiece of local baseball, the grandstand originally stood at the North Side Ball Park, where fans cheered on the "Mayville Ironmen" in the early 20th century. This park was located on Northwestern Iron Company land which sat just north of the dam on Highway 28, the grandstand was relocated to Fireman’s Field after the company left town, where it has served the community since the 1920’s.
Founded last year, Mayville Cares Inc. is a local nonprofit dedicated to revitalizing aging facilities that residents and visitors frequently enjoy in the Mayville area. In addition to restoring existing spaces, the organization also hopes to pursue new projects that enhance the beauty and historic charm of Mayville, bringing in new revenue and, perhaps, even new residents. Their first project focused on improving the city’s kayak launch, including the installation of a new, more accessible pier in July 2024.
To support the grandstand restoration, Mayville Cares Inc. will be holding a fundraising banquet on March 13, 2025 at the Mayville Golf Course. Doors open at 5 p.m. Sponsorship opportunities are available at various levels, each with a baseball-themed designation. A permanent sign will be placed at Fireman’s Field to recognize the "Friends of Mayville Cares" who contribute to the project.
