The Mayville Cardinals hosted the Horicon Marshmen for an electric non-conference boys’ basketball rivalry game on Monday, Feb. 23, ultimately securing a 72-56 victory.
The game started with Horicon scoring the first two points, but Mayville’s Braxton Wiese quickly answered with a three-pointer.
The first half was a back-and-forth battle, with both teams tied at seven points at the 13:45 mark.
Mayville began to take control, building a 15-9 lead before Wiese temporarily left the game due to an ankle injury.
Horicon fought back hard. Christian Schwartz assisted Logan Robenhorst to break up Mayville’s scoring run, followed by back-to-back three-pointers from Barrett Meyer and Quin Jackl, which gave the Marshmen their first lead, 17-15, with seven minutes left in the half.

The lead quickly changed hands again on a three by Mayville’s Tate Drinkwine.
The game was tied at 25 in the final minute, but Talan Meyer of the Cardinals hit a clutch three-pointer to take the lead.
However, Horicon’s Christian Schwartz beat the buzzer with a three-pointer of his own, sending the Marshmen into halftime with a narrow 31-30 lead.
The second half belonged to the Cardinals. T. Meyer opened the half with a three-pointer, and Kevin Keller contributed with a shot from underneath the hoop, helping Mayville stretch their lead to 39-31.
Horicon attempted to rally, with B. Meyer sinking free throws and a three-pointer, and Jay Graven hitting a three to keep the game within reach, 49-43, with 10 minutes remaining.

Mayville maintained their advantage, leading 56-50 with three-and-a-half minutes on the clock.
In a well-executed play, Emerson Mittelstadt passed the ball to Keller from the sideline and got it back for a layup, helping the Cardinals solidify their lead.
Mayville was up 60-52 with 1:37 left before both teams halted play early with 20 seconds remaining.
The Cardinals’ second-half surge proved too much for the Marshmen, as Mayville closed out the game with a final score of 72-56.
