Mayville Basketball Coach Brett Kirmse Resigns After Two Seasons

Posted

Mayville, Wisc. - Reports surfaced on social media indicating the resignation of Mayville High School varsity basketball coach Brett Kirmse. Kirmse, who took over the program in September 2023, previously coached at West Bend East as a JV2 boys' basketball coach and served as an assistant coach at Random Lake. Under his leadership, the Cardinals closed their season with a 7-18 overall record and a 5-9 mark in conference play.

Mayville Jr./Sr. High School Athletic Director Scott Hilber expressed gratitude for Kirmse’s contributions during a challenging period for the program.

"We appreciate Brett for his two years of dedicated service to our basketball program. He has a real passion for the game and exhibits exemplary character. He was a great role model for our boys and did a tremendous job leading the team through a tough transition—especially considering he stepped into the role just three months before the season began, which is no easy task," Hilber said.

Though the position ultimately wasn’t the right fit for Kirmse, Mayville is looking ahead.

"It’s unfortunate things didn’t work out, but we’re excited about the opportunity to assemble a committee and take our time finding the best fit for our program moving forward. Mayville has a strong basketball tradition, and we’re eager to bring in a coach who can restore our program to a competitive level," Hilber added.

Mayville’s search for a new head coach will be closely watched as the Cardinals aim to rebuild and return to their “highly competitive” winning level.
