The Horicon girls’ basketball team concluded their season in a heartbreaking overtime loss to Random Lake on Tuesday, Feb. 24, in the first round of the WIAA girls’ basketball tournament. The final score was 77-70 in favor of 12th-seeded Random Lake, who overcame a strong showing from the fifth-seeded Marshladies.
Horicon started the game with an offensive explosion, particularly from beyond the arc. The first half was a three-point frenzy, with Emily Bunkoske draining three, Aubrey Ehrlich adding two, and Azelyn Heller and Olivia Wittnebel each contributing one. This hot shooting gave Horicon a 33-28 lead at the break.
The momentum shifted early in the second half when Random Lake quickly tied the game at 33. Horicon regained the lead and held it until the final seconds. With only 6.7 seconds left, Random Lake tied the game again at 61 with crucial free throws, sending the contest into overtime.
In the extra period, Horicon lost the lead for the first time all night. Despite late three-pointers from Mady Rinderle and Heller, Random Lake pulled ahead to secure the 77-70 victory.
While the season ended sooner than hoped, the game was a milestone night for senior Mady Rinderle, who scored her 1,000th career point in the season-ending effort.
