Horicon girls’ basketball (6-4) showed their strength on Thursday, Jan. 8, by soundly defeating Oakfield (0-11) with a final score of 70-39.
The Marshladies set the tone early with an opening three-pointer from Emily Bunkoske. While Oakfield managed to keep the margin close for a period in the first half, Horicon’s defense was relentless, creating numerous opportunities to steal the ball and extend their lead. Cassidy Wittnebel highlighted the closing of the first half action with a three-pointer from the right corner with two-and-a-half minutes left.
Horicon carried their momentum into the second half. Aubrey Ehrlich started the half with a three-pointer, and the team continued to pull away. Leading 42-19, Azelyn Heller secured a rebound off an Oakfield air ball and swiftly took it down the court for a layup. Bunkoske found her range again in the second half, hitting a three from the left corner and later connecting on another from the same spot before the final buzzer. Heller also contributed with another fast break score with just over four minutes remaining, bringing the score to 63-33.
Sarah Hodgson was the statistical leader for the Marshladies, delivering an impressive double-double with 20 points and 11 rebounds.
Vs Abundant Life
Horicon girls’ basketball (5-4) suffered a tough loss to Abundant Life (7-2) on Monday, Jan. 5, with a final score of 75-46.
The Marshladies started strong on defense, resulting in several early steals. Azelyn Heller capitalized on this pressure, recording four total steals, including one that led to two points to make the early score 8-12, in favor of the Challengers.
Horicon’s offense found some rhythm late in the first half when Aubrey Ehrlich hit back-to-back three-pointers.
In the second half, the Challengers extended their lead, but Emily Bunkoske attempted to spark a comeback, draining back-to-back three-pointers from the corners to narrow the score to 42-60.
Sarah Hodgson delivered a standout performance for the Marshladies, leading the team with 14 points and pulling down an impressive 17 rebounds.
The girls played Valley Christian at home on Tuesday night after print time. Then they travel to Deerfield on Thursday night for a 5:45 p.m. game.
