Lomira senior Marshall Hanke was named Flyway Wrestler of the Year to cap off his brilliant wrestling career as a Lomira Lion.
“Marshall is a phenomenal wrestler, one of the best in Lomira history, and he is a phenomenal person, leader, and student,” said Lomira Head Coach Adam Kinyon. “He is someone that I can point to and proudly say he is the epitome of Lomira wrestling. Marshall is everything that I strive to help every single one of my wrestlers to be.”
Marshall started wrestling at the age of seven but he started taking wrestling seriously when he was 11, which led him on the path to be one of the best wrestlers the Lomira wrestling program has seen.
“Wrestling is important to me because I enjoy all of the real-world lessons it teaches like discipline and hard work,” said Marshall Hanke. “Sometimes things don’t always go how you want them to go and then you have to adjust.”
Marshall’s Career Achievements:
• Twice on the state podium with a sixth-place finish in 2024 and fifth place finish in 2025
• Three-time Flyway conference champion
• First in all-time wins at Lomira with 166 wins
• First in single-season wins with 51 wins in 2024-25
• Fourth in single-season wins with 48 wins in 2023-24
• First in all-time takedowns with 354 takedowns
• First in single-season takedowns with 130 takedowns in 2024-25
• Second in single-season takedowns with 114 takedowns in 2023-24
• Third in all-time career near fall points with 345 points
• Ninth in single season near fall points with 120 points
“My two favorite moments from this past year were placing third at On the Water and winning Regionals,” said Hanke.
“All of my Lomira coaches have always been with me since middle school and were preparing me for a successful High School career,” said Hanke. “It was also surreal to wrestle with the rest of the seniors for the past four years and growing together as a class.”
“My major influences were my three club coaches (Max Askren, Eli Were, and Wilder Wichman) and I learned a lot from watching wrestling,” said Hanke.
“I am very grateful that I had the opportunity to be his coach throughout his high school career and to be part of his journey,” said Kinyon. “There is no doubt in my mind that Marshall will go on to do great things in his life after high school, and I hope he is able to come back to the area after college to coach with me.”
“I want to thank the Lomira coaches, teammates, and community for their support because it is an award that everyone can celebrate together,” said Hanke.
Marshall will be attending Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa to continue his education in criminology and his wrestling career. (Wartburg won the Division 3 National Title during this past season.)
