On July 28, the Lomira/Theresa 19U Baseball Legion team beat Horicon 8-4 in the second game of the evening to advance to the Wisconsin American Legion Baseball Association 37th Annual Class A State Tournament in Westby, August 1-5.
Lomira/Theresa (16-1) responded to their first loss of the season by scoring the first run of the championship game in the first inning, thanks to a RBI single from Weston Poth.
The game was tied at two after four innings, when the Bolts broke open the tight game with RBI singles from Weston Poth, Jackson Goebel, and Jonah Mason to give Lomira/Theresa a 6-2 lead over Horicon (11-7) after five innings.
Horicon wasn’t going to go quietly into the night, by getting the base loaded in the sixth inning with no outs, and were able to get two runs across the plate to close the gap on the scoreboard to 6-4.
Easton Zangl hit a two-run home run over the center field fence to increase their lead back to four runs at 8-4 in the championship game.
Starting Pitcher Ty Wolff pitched six innings on the mound to help secure the 8-4 regional victory and sending the Bolts back to the state tournament for the second straight year with the opportunity to defend their state championship.
“Ty had an impressive game on the mound tossing six strong innings,” said Head Coach Sid Lehman. “Easton’s late-game home run added insurance, and it took a true team effort to win the tournament.”
“I am proud of the way that the boys competed this weekend through the adversity throughout the weekend with every one of the boys contributing to the regional win,” Lehman. “We are looking forward to the state tournament and competing against the best teams in the state in our division.”
Lomira/Theresa lost the first game of the day to Horicon 12-5, forcing a winner-takes-all game two between the two teams on a hot and humid evening.
The Bolts had an early 2-0 lead after two innings, but Horicon (11-7) responded to take a 4-3 lead in the fourth inning when Dalton Zingsheim hit a home run to lead off the bottom of the fourth inning to tie the game at four.
Horicon took control of the first game by capitalizing on getting the bases loaded twice in the sixth inning to score eight runs, giving Horicon a 12-4 lead over Lomira/Theresa (16-1).
Horicon finished off the Bolts during the final two innings to take home the 12-5 victory to force the second game of the Championship round.
On July 27, Lomira/Theresa (16-1) beat Horicon (11-7) 14-4 for their third win in three days to advance to the Horicon Regional Championship game on Monday.
The Bolts jumped out to a 2-0 lead over Horicon in the first inning, thanks to a RBI double by Weston Poth and a RBI single by Jack Luedtke.
Lomira/Theresa added a run apiece in the third inning and fifth inning to extend their lead to 4-0, before the Bolts got the bases loaded with two outs in the sixth inning, where Lomira/Theresa manufactured to get six runs across the plate to take a commanding 10-0 lead over Horicon.
Horicon responded with four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, to make the score 10-4 in favor of the Bolts entering the final inning of the game.
Kolton Wagoner got the seventh inning started with a triple to center field, which was followed by RBI singles by Brody Luedtke, J. Luedtke, and Dalton Zingsheim to put the score at 13-4, before Jackson Goebel finished the scoring burst with a RBI double to make the final score 14-4 for the Lomira/Theresa win.
On July 26, Lomira/Theresa (16-1) had a dominating 18-1 win over Orfordville in six innings, with their offense leading the way with 18 hits in the contest.
The Bolts’ offense was led by Weston Poth’s three extra bases, including a home run, Brody Luedtke, Easton Zangl, and Jonah Mason all had doubles in the game for Lomira/Theresa.
On July 25, Lomira/Thersa (16-1) started their Horicon Regional play with a 9-2 win over East Troy in their first game of the weekend.
The Bolts broke open the game in the third inning with five runs to take a 6-0 lead and never looked back in their 9-2 first-round win.
Easton Zangl and Brody Luedtke led the way for the offense, combining for five hits and four runs for Lomira/Theresa in the win.
Lomira/Theresa is the Class A state defending champions and will look to repeat as champions starting on August 1 at 7:30 p.m. against Westby-Coon Valley at Veterans Memorial Field in Westby in their first game of the state tournament. They will play their second game of the tournament on August 2 with game times at 1 p.m. (Game 1 loss) or 7 p.m. (Game 1 win). The rest of the potential tournament games will depend on the results of the first two games.
