On August 21, Lomira football and Husticon football teams kicked off their seasons with the Lions coming away with a 44-0 win at Lomira, which was shortened by lightning with 8:59 left in the third quarter.
Lomira (1-0) got off to a fast start after the Lions defense started with a three-and-out, giving the ball to the offense.
Senior Quarterback Keegan Kell burst through the Husticon (0-1) defense for a 47-yard rushing touchdown, giving the Lions a 7-0 lead at the 9:01 mark in the first quarter.
Hunter Schaumberg intercepted a pass for the Lions defense and scored the first of his four touchdowns in the game with a 30-yard rushing touchdown, increasing the Lomira lead to 14-0 with 6:26 in the first quarter.
“With 13 seniors, we have very good chemistry and it showed as we dominated on both sides of the ball,” said Lomira Sophomore Running Back/Defensive Back Hunter Schaumberg. “The win was great, but we have to find ways to keep getting better every week.”
Schaumberg returned a punt for a touchdown after the Lions’ defense forced a three-and-out for a 21-0 lead
The Lions’ defense forced another three-and-out from Husticon when Cole Geiger tackled Husticon Running Back Eleazar Selgrad for a three-yard loss.
Kell found Jackson Bloohm for a 52-yard passing touchdown, increasing Lomira’s advantage to 27-0 with 1:24 left in the first quarter.
“Keegan trusts his teammates to make plays and does a great job sharing the ball and facilitating the offense,” said Head Coach Bryan Gregory. “He’s the leveling force we need out there to help us stay focused and motivated.”
Husticon got a first down on a pass from Anthony Kluck to Kaleb Hodgson for 15 yards before the Lions got a sack by Mason Schelvan on fourth down, giving the ball back to the Lomira offense.
Lomira got another Schaumberg rushing touchdown with a 38-yard score on the first offensive play on the ensuing possession.
On the Lions’ final offensive possession, Aiden Stoffel connected on a 23-yard field goal, giving the Lions a 37-0 lead
Jackson Brieltow got a sack ending Husticon’s final drive of the first half, with Lomira going into the halftime break with a 37-0 lead.
“Aiden is a weapon with his kicking, helping field position for the team by making the opposing team need to go 80 yards,” said Gregory.
Schaumberg scored his final touchdown of the game with a 12-yard touchdown after a 53-yard weaving carry, putting the Lions up 44-0 before the game was called due to lightning with 8:59 left in the third quarter.
“Hunter is a special player who just keeps getting better with the amount of work he puts in behind the scenes on Friday nights under the lights,” said Gregory. “He’s the ultimate team player and will do whatever it takes to help this team succeed.”
The Lions gained 312 total yards on offense and held the Marsh Falcons to 24 total yards on defense.
“Our line on both sides of the ball did some great things because being able to control the game up front is going to be huge for us as we navigate through the season,” said Gregory. “We need to get better and strive for more, but I have all the confidence in this group to go out there and dominate football games at a high level.
“When we stayed on our blocks on offense, we could really move the ball,” said Gregory. “Our defense stymied them most of the night with our players flying around by playing fast and physical.”
“We knew it was going to be a tough game against a quality football program,” said Husticon Head Coach Andrew Selgrad. “We challenged our team by winning a play, then winning the next one, but it was a learning experience for our team.”
“It was our first week with our goal of playing a clean game, and we accomplished a lot of good things, but we aren’t a finished product with this game being one step along the journey,” said Gregory.
Husticon football will travel to Fall River/Rio and Lomira will host Milwaukee King with both games on Friday, Aug. 28 at 7 p.m.
