On May 29, Lomira softball beat four-seed Adams-Friendship 2-0 to win the regional championship for the first time since 2021.
Lomira (22-3) took a 1-0 lead over Adams-Friendship (17-9) when Trista Gassner scored a run for the Lions in the first inning.
The Lions got a triple hit into center field, which rolled to the fence, allowing Brianna Frea to sprint towards third base and slide into the base just before the tag was placed by the Adams-Friendship third baseman.
Lomira held the Devils’ bats at bay all game with another strong performance from Lomira’s pitching duo of Haleigh Caspary and Nora Buske by striking out 15 batters and allowing only one hit in the Regional Final game to secure the 2-0 win.
“Our pitchers have been strong in the circle along with our defense, and our offense has shown up when it needs to and can be contagious,” said Head Coach Stacey Clark.
The Lions were led by Lillian Christian’s two hits, and the Frea sisters combined for two extra-base hits to lead the Lomira offense in the victory.
“I am very proud of our players for facing some adversity and continuing to believe and have energy to be in the moment and focus on being where our feet are,” said Clark. “We are excited to continue checking off goals for the season.”
Vs WLA-Second Round
On May 27, Lomira softball beat WLA 6-2 in the first round to advance to the regional final as the number-one seed.
WLA (7-12) took a 1-0 lead over Lomira (22-3) in the top of the first inning before the Lions responded with two runs in the bottom of the first inning, featuring a Nora Buske RBI single to take a 2-1 lead over the Vikings.
The Vikings tied the game back at two in the second inning, with the 2-2 score holding up until the fifth inning when the Lions’ offense responded with two outs.
Savanna Frea hit an RBI double to drive in Trista Gassner for Lomira to retake the lead at 3-2, but the Lions weren’t done in the inning when they loaded the bases.
Haleigh Caspary responded with a single to right field to clear the bases for the Lions, resulting in three runs for Lomira and increasing their lead to 6-2 over WLA.
Nora Buske and Haleigh Caspary combined for a no-hitter with 14 strikeouts to shut down the Vikings the rest of the way to secure the second-round playoff win.
Trista Gassner and Buske each had two hits apiece in the game, giving the top-seeded Lions the opportunity to host Adams-Friendship in the Regional Final on Thursday.
Lomira softball hosted two-seeded Laconia in the sectional semifinal on June 3, and the Sectional Final is scheduled for June 5.
