On May 18, Lomira softball beat Springs 14-0 in five innings on the road to win their second consecutive Flyway Conference championship and the program’s first outright conference championship.
Lomira (20-2, 13-1) scored four runs in the first inning, featuring RBI singles from Izzy Westphal and Briann Frea plus a RBI double from Haliegh Caspary to take a 4-0 lead over Springs (6-12, 5–9).
The Lions added five more runs in the second inning, highlighted by a Lily Christian two-run RBI triple and another RBI double from Caspary to give Lomira a commanding 9- 0 lead over the Ledgers.
Lomira tallied three runs in the fourth inning when Westphal and Caspary scored, which was followed by an Eleanor Collies triple, with Addy Behnke hitting an RBI single to wrap up the scoring to expand the Lions’ lead to 12-0.
Christian finished off the scoring with an RBI double in the fifth inning to give the conference championship clinching 14-0 win for Lomira.
Haleigh Caspary and Lily Christian combined for a five-inning no-hitter by striking out 11 batters in the victory.
Izzy Westphal, Christian, and Caspary combined to drive in seven runs for the Lions to help sweep the Ledgers on the season.
‘We are incredibly proud to win the Flyway outright. It is a tough conference, and there are lots of great teams and battles,” said Head Coach Stacey Clark. “Being back-to-back champs shows the resilience of our team and their determination to maintain high expectations.”
Vs Campbellsoort
On May 14, Lomira softball defeated Campbellsport 11-2 at home to extend its winning streak to 11 games and secure at least a share of the conference title on Senior Night for Haleigh Caspary, Eleanor Collies, and Trista Gassner.
Campbellsport (19-5, 12-2) got on the scoreboard first in the second inning with a Reyse Steffen RBI double to take a 1-0 lead over Lomira (20-2, 13-1).
Ava Sabish led off the third inning with a double to center field before Emam Muraski hit a double to right field to drive in Sabish to increase their lead to 2-0 over the Lions.
Lomira scored its first run off an RBI double from Lily Christian in the bottom of the third inning to cut into the Cougars’ lead at 2-1.
Izzy Westphal hit a double for the Lions, then Christian hit an RBI double to tie the game at two in the fifth inning.
The Lions took the lead in the fifth inning on an RBI single by Haleigh Caspary, giving Lomira their first lead of the game at 3-2.
The turning point of the game was an 11-pitch at-bat in the sixth inning for Christian against Cougars Olivia McCarty, with both players not wanting to give in to the other for their respective teams.
Christian won the battle with a looping single over first base, landing in right field, driving in two runs with her single to push the Lions’ lead to 5-2 over the Cougars.
Lomira would go on to score six more runs, highlighted by RBI singles by Brianna Frea, Eleanor Coliies, and Tori Thomas in the bottom of the sixth inning to secure the 11-2 victory over Campbellsport in the matchup of the Flyway Conference’s two best teams on the season.
Lily Christian, Brianna Frea, and Eleanor Collies combined for nine hits and six runs batted in for the Lions in the big conference victory.
“We are very proud of our fight against Campbellsport. They have great pitching, and our hitters kept adjusting and believing they could find ways to put the ball in play,” said Head Coach Stacey Clark. “Our pitching staff worked through some pressure and found ways to get outs, and our defense stepped up big when they needed to. It was a total team effort and a great battle. The team had a ton of energy tonight and really supported each other.”
“Trista, Haleigh, and Eleanor have been true leaders this season, and they have been welcoming and kept the message to the team simple - one pitch at a time,” said Clark. “They support each other and their team and have also been key pieces to our success, and grateful for their dedication and love of the game. They have created a culture of support and high expectations, making this season so positive.”
Vs Omro
On May 12, Lomira softball beat Omro 17-2 in four innings at home to stay tied in first place in the Flyway Conference.
Omro (5-15, 1-11) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning before Lomira (20-2, 13-1) responded with four runs in the bottom of the inning, featuring RBI singles from Kennedy Goebel, Izzy Westphal, and Eleanor Collies to take a 4-2 lead over the Foxes.
Lomira started the second inning with singles from Tori Thomas and Trista Gassner to get the bases loaded to help score three runs in the inning, highlighted by a Lily Christian two-run RBI single to increase their lead to 7-2.
The Lions got a leadoff single from Collies to start the third inning, followed by an RBI double from Thomas, and Lomira got an RBI triple from Goebel plus an RBI single from Westphal with two outs to push the Lions’ lead to 10-2.
Lomira’s offense scoring barrage continued in the fourth inning, scoring seven runs featuring RBI singles from Cali Steger and Addy Behnke, including a two-run RBI double from Lily Christian to give the Lions the winning margin of 17-2 in four innings.
Lily Christian and Izzy Westphal led the way with seven runs batted in for the Lions, who scored 17 runs on 17 hits in the conference victory.
Lomira softball hosted Waupun on May 19 after print time. The Lions will host Random Lake on May 20 at 5 p.m.
The Lomira softball team received a one seed and a first-round bye in the WIAA Division 3 Softball Tournament. Lomira will play its second round game against the winner of No. 9 Cedar Grove-Belgium and No. 8 Berlin on May 26.
