On April 10, Lomira softball beat New Holstein 8-4 on the road for their fourth consecutive win to start the season.
Lomira (4-0) scored three runs in the first inning to take a 3-0 lead over New Holstein (2-1), featuring an Izzy Westphal RBI single and a Lily Christian solo home run over the left field fence for the Lions.
The Lions got out of a bases-loaded jam with no outs by allowing no runs to the Huskies in the bottom of the inning.
Lomira’s offense got singles from Tori Thoms and Trista Gassner to start the second inning before the Lions received back-to-back RBI singles from Kennedy Goebel and Lily Christian to increase their lead to 5-0.
The Lions’ offense continued in the second inning by loading bases when Eleanor Collies delivered a two-run single to push the Lomira lead to 7-0 after two innings.
New Holstein attempted to get back into the game with two runs in the fifth and sixth innings to close the gap on the scoreboard to 7-4 in favor of Lomira.
Senior Haleigh Caspary added to the Lions’ lead with a solo home run over the center field fence in the top of the seventh inning to give Lomira their leading margin of 8-4 over New Holstein.
Lily Christian got the win for the Lions after allowing zero runs in four innings and led the offense with three hits, including a home run.
Trista Gassner, Kennedy Goebel, and Haliegh Capsary combined for six hits and four runs in the non-conference win.
Vs WLA
On April 9, Lomra softball defeated WLA 7-4 to stay undefeated in their Flyway Conference home opener.
WLA (1-2, 1-1) jumped out to a 2-0 lead after scoring runs in the first and third innings before Lomira (4-0, 2-0) responded in the bottom of the third inning with three runs featuring a RBI single from Izzy Wesphal and two-run RBi double with two outs to give the Lions a 3-2 lead after three innings.
The Lions scored three runs in the fifth inning, which was started by singles from Tori Thomas and Trista Gassner, highlighted by an RBI single from Westphal to increase the Lomira lead to 6-2.
Lomira added a run in the sixth inning by a RBI single from Thomas for a 7-2 lead before the Vikings scored two runs in the seventh inning to make the final score 7-4 in favor of the Lions.
Haleigh Caspary pitched four innings by striking out nine WLA batters from the pitching circle in the victory.
Lomira’s offense was paced by Trista Gassner, Tori Thomas, and Izzy Westpahl, combining for seven hits and scoring five runs in the matchup.
At Mayville
On April 7, Lomira softball defeated Mayville 17-4 in five innings to start the Flyway Conference schedule for both teams on a cool spring day in Mayville.
Lomira’s (4-0, 2-0) offense got hot in the first inning with seven runs featuring RBI doubles from Izzy Westphal, Lily Christian, Eleanor Collies, and Addy Behnke to take a 7-0 lead over Mayville (0-2, 0-1).
Westphal, from her catcher position, threw out a runner at second base to end the first inning for the Cardinals.
The Lions added a run in the third inning to take an 8-0 lead before Lomira scored three runs in the fourth inning, highlighted by an RBI single from Christian and a two-run RBI single from Haleigh Caspary to increase the Lions’ lead to 11-0 after four innings.
Lomira didn’t let off the gas in the fifth inning by scoring six more runs, thanks to RBI doubles from Cali Steger, McKenna Casper, and Westphal to take a commanding 17-0 lead over the Cardinals.
Mayville scored four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, highlighted by a base-clearing hit by Janel Youngbeck, driving in three runs to make the final score 17-4 in Lomira’s road conference win.
Lomira was led by Lily Christian, Addy Behnke, Izzy Westphal, and McKenna Casper, each driving in two runs apiece in the victory.
Lomira softball played at NFDL on April 14 after print time. The Lions will host Laconia on April 16 and Winneconne on April 20, with first pitch scheduled for 5 p.m. for both games.
