On January 17, Lomira boys’ basketball defeated Ellsworth 65-62 in the Midwest Players Classic held in La Crosse Center.
It was a close contest with Lomira (12-1) holding a 22-20 lead over Ellsworth (6-4) before the Lions extended their lead to go into the halftime break ahead with a score of 34-25.
The Lions started the second half with a 9-0 scoring run to extend their lead to 43-25 over Ellsworth, but Lomira soon discovered they were in a close game when Ellsworth started to control the game by tying the game up at 58 with two minutes left in the second half.
Lomira outscored Ellsworth 7-4 in the final two minutes to secure the non-conference 65-62 win in La Crosse.
Blake Steger was named the Midwest Players Classic Player of the Game by scoring a team-high 16 points for the Lions.
“Ellsworth was a really good team holding us to two made three-pointers in the game,” said Head Coach Nick Kohler. “Some team highlights were Charlie with nine rebounds and Hunter getting seven steals.”
At NFDL
On January 16, Lomira boys’ basketball beat North Fond du Lac 97-69 in the second game of the boys’ and girls’ doubleheader for basketball at NFDL in the Flyway Conference.
Lomira (12-1, 6-0) held a 13-7 lead over NFDL (3-10, 0-6) thanks to Blake Steger and Jake Broeske combining to score 11 of 13 first points for the Lions.
Steger scored six straight points for the Lions, highlighted by a spinning finish in the lane to extend the Lomira lead to 21-11, then Maddox Bodden got into the scoring act with a three-pointer off of good ball movement to push the Lions’ lead to 24-13.
Broeske scored two straight baskets for the Lions, putting the score at 32-22 when Lomira put the game away with a 15-0 scoring run, with Steger scoring seven of those points to expand their lead to 47-22.
Keegan Kell made a basket for Lomira before the halftime break to put the score in favor of the Lions at 49-27.
The Broeske and Steger scoring surge continued at the start of the second half, with both players scoring baskets to make the score 53-27.
Kell and Bodden knocked three-pointers to increase the Lomira score to 59-33 before Kell went on to score seven more points to help balloon the Lions’ lead to 68-39.
The Lions continued to cruise the rest of the way in the second half to a commanding 97-69 conference victory,
Lomira was led by Blake Steger with 24 points, plus Jake Broeske’s 22 points and Keegan Kell’s 18 points in the matchup.
Lomira boys’ basketball will host Mayville on January 23 at 7 p.m.
