On September 20, the Lomira girls’ cross country team finished in first place with 46 points to win the Kris Greening Invitational, and the boys’ team finished in ninth place with 229 points in Ripon.
“On a wet and muddy Ripon course, the Lomira girls’ cross country team rose to the challenge and claimed the team title,” said Head Coach Tyler Witkowski. “The Lions packed the front and leaned on their depth with five runners in the top 17 and all seven pushing through the muck. Lomira showed grit and unity that carried them to the top of the podium on a tough September morning.”
“Sophomore Whitney Witkowski set the tone with a determined fourth-place finish in 20:58, with classmate Josie Christian close behind in fifth at 21:15,” said Witkowski. “Junior Hanna Faber rounded out the Lions’ top trio, clocking 21:32 for seventh place.”
“The course was tough—mud everywhere, heavy legs, and slick footing, and our top five did a great job racing strong, but I also want to point out Tori and Elinorah,” said Witkowski. “On a day like this, depth matters. They kept competing and gave us the kind of effort that championship teams rely on.”
“Today was all about perseverance; we had four runners (Cleary, Luke, Mike, Will W.) run their best time of the year,” said Witkowski. “I love this team. Our boys battled every step through the mud by keeping fighting and showed the kind of effort that builds character and strengthens the team.”
At Berlin
On September 16, the Lomira girls’ cross country team finished in second place with 58 points, and the boys’ team finished in seventh place with 170 points at the Berlin Invitational.
“On a sweltering afternoon at the Mascoutin Golf Course, we battled through the heat, and we had three personal records despite the conditions, which says a lot about their focus and toughness,” said Witkowski. “This group keeps finding ways to get better each week.”
“Leading the charge for the Lions was sophomore Josie Christian, clocking 20:58.6 for eighth overall, and close behind was junior Hanna Faber in 21:24.0 for tenth place,” said Witkowski.
“We knew the weather was going to be a factor today, but the girls didn’t back down,” said Witkowski. “They raced smart and stuck together when it mattered.”
Lomira cross country goes to Horicon on September 25 at 4 p.m.
