Lomira Girls Cross Country Wins Opening Meet

On Thursday, August 27, the Lomira Girls Cross Country team won the Palmyra-Eagle Invitational, starting their season with 45 points as a team.

The Lions were led by Junior Whitney Witkowski’s second-place finish, with Junior Elinorah Langjahr reaching her personal best time of 22:13 in eighth place and Junior Josie Christian in tenth.

Freshman Carter Knoop made an immediate impact in her first varsity meet, running a personal-best 22:44 to finish 12th, and Junior Kennedy Goebel finished 13th to help the Lions win their opening meet of the season.

“Overall, I was really proud of how our girls competed,” said Head Coach Tyler Witkowski. “For the first meet of the season, there were a lot of positives.”

“We saw some great individual performances, but more importantly, I thought our girls competed for each other and showed the kind of toughness and confidence we will need as the season moves forward,” said Witkowski

“We know we have work to do, and that’s exactly what this first race is for,” said Witkowski. “I’m excited about this group because they care about getting better, they care about their teammates, and they are willing to put in the work.”

“We’re going to take what we learned from Thursday, keep building, and be better the next time we race,” said Witkowski.

The Lomira boys cross-country team finished in tenth place with 272 team points.

“For our first meet, I was really pleased with the effort and the way the guys competed,” said Witkowski. “There are definitely things we can improve, but this is a group that is willing to work, and that is what we need early in the season.”

“The goal right now isn’t to be perfect; it’s to get better every time we race,” said Witkowski. “I want the guys to be proud of the work they’re putting in, support each other and have confidence that the results will come as we continue to train.”

Lomira cross-country teams travel to Horicon on September 3 at 4 p.m.
