On October 9, the Lomira girls’ cross country team finished in first place with 19 points at the Lomira Lion Invitational, and the boys’ team finished in third place with 53 points.
“Lomira dominated the field with cool temperatures, a light breeze, and bright sunshine, which made for ideal racing weather, and the Lions took full advantage by taking first place,” said Head Coach Tyler Witkowski. “Josie Christian made the charge on the final lap, winning the race with a time of 20:47, and Whitney Witkowski (21:07) and Hanna Faber (21:19) followed close behind, finishing strong in third and fourth.”

“Kennedy Goebel (21:51) and Isabel Westphal (21:53) rounded out Lomira’s scoring five, both breaking the 22-minute mark and crossing the finish line in sixth and seventh place,” said Witkowski.
“There’s something special about running on your home course with the girls who know every turn, every hill, and you can feel the extra motivation with family and friends cheering,” said Witkowski. “It’s a moment we look forward to every season.”
“Everyone was racing for each other today,” said Hanna Faber. “It was great to see so many PRs on our home course, and it really shows how far we’ve come this season.”
“Leading the way was freshman Luke Unruh, who continued his great season with a strong 20:16 finish by placing sixth overall,” said Witkowski. “Just seconds behind was junior Cleary Twohig (20:24) in eighth and freshman William Stuewer, who set a new personal record at 21:03 for tenth place.”
“You could feel a different vibe today, and the kids love running their home course,” said Witkowksi. “Watching them run today and enjoy this environment was exactly what you want to see this time of year.”
It was also Senior Day, as Lomira celebrated Matthew Freitag and Michael Banasynski for their dedication and leadership throughout their cross-country careers.
“Those two have set the tone for what it means to be a Lion,” said Witkowski. “They show up every day, put in the work, and encourage everyone around them, with having a very positive impact on our team this season.”
Lomira cross country will have its Flyway Conference cross country ceet at Rolling Meadows Golf Course on October 16 at 4 p.m.
