On September 11, the Lomira girls cross country team finished in second place at the Mike Hurlbert Invitational in Mayville.
Whitney Witkowski’s fifth-place finish with a time of 20:24, along with Carter Knoop’s seventh place finish with a personal best time of 20:29 paced the Lions during the meet.
“We asked the girls to battle through a really tough week of practice, and they did exactly that,” said Lomira head coach Tyler Witkowski. “I couldn't be more proud of the effort from every runner. This was a tough meet against a very good KML team, and our girls never backed down. Finishing second behind the No. 2-ranked Division 2 team is a great result, but I'm even more proud of how they competed for each other.”
“This group continues to show how tough they are,” Lomira Assistant Chris Gatzke said. “When you have a difficult week of training and then come out and compete like this, it says a lot about the character of the team. Everyone contributed, and there were a lot of positives to take away from this race.”
“It wasn't necessarily about having a perfect race today,” said Witkowski. “It was about competing, staying together, and not giving in when things got difficult. Every single runner did a great job, and that's what makes this team special.”
Lomira boys cross country team finished in 12th place at the Invite
“I thought our kids did a great job today. This was a tough meet coming off a tough week of practice, and you could see that everyone was working through some tired legs,” said Witkowski. “What I really liked was that nobody gave in. They kept competing all the way to the finish line, and that says a lot about this group.”
“This is exactly the type of meet that can make us better,” said Gatzke. “The times and places are only part of the story. Our runners stayed together, fought through the tough parts and continued to compete. We are proud of the effort they gave today.”
Lomira cross country teams competed at the Berlin Invitational on September 15 after print time and will travel to the Ripon Invitational on September 19.
