On December 19, Lomira girls’ basketball beat Mayville 72-43 in their Flyway Conference matchup.
Lomira (8-1, 3-1) had a 34-25 lead at halftime over the hosting Mayville Cardinals (4-4, 1-3).
“We came out attacking and then handled a run in the past two games before halftime,” said Head Coach Liz Cook. “The girls did a really good job of making adjustments on defense, and we held teams to lower points in the second half than in the first half.”
The Lions broke open the game in the second half by outscoring the Cardinals by 20 points.
“With our depth, we were able to continue to push the ball and put pressure on their guards to wear them down,” said Cook.
Lomira’s backcourt duo of Josie Christian, 28 points, and Kennedy Goebel, 18 points, led the way for the Lions in the impressive 72-43 conference victory on the road.
Mayville was led by Ady Christian’s 21 points in the conference matchup.
“Our team is playing well together, and when someone is not playing the greatest, there are several teammates to be there to pick them up,” said Cook. “That is what is so great about this team, is that everyone has had games where they have excelled in their role and helped out team to win.”
At Markesan
On December 16, Lomira girls’ basketball beat Markesan 54-36 on the road in their non-conference matchup.
Rachel Chervenka and Josie Christian combined to score the first nine points, highlighted by Chervenka’s offensive rebound finish and J. Christian’s three-pointer for Lomira (8-1) to give the Lions a 9-2 lead over Markesan (5-3).
J.Christian stole the ball and pulled up for a jumper to give Lomira, and then her cousin Lily Christian scored back-to-back baskets, which were followed by two more baskets from J. Christian to give the Lions a 26-17 lead over the Hornets.
Lomira’s defense got into the act with J. Christian getting a steal to set up a Kennedy Goebel three-pointer, which was followed by Chervenka stealing the ball from the Hornets, which was converted into two points, giving the Lions a 31-20 halftime lead.
Chervenka started off the second half by scoring for the first four points for the Lions to give them a 35-23 lead, then Lomira ballooned their lead to 46-25, highlighted by L. Christian’s offensive rebound putback and J. Christian’s score off a steal, followed by a pull-up jumper for the Lions.
Markesan tried to fight their way back into the game, but Whitney Witkowski knocked down a three-pointer to take away any hope of a comeback and making the score 49-34 in favor of the Lions.
Lomira finished the game with a 53-36 victory, and they were led by Josie Christian’s 21 points in the contest.
Lomira girls basketball plays next on December 27 and December 28 in the Sentry Classic at UW-Stevens Point.
