On February 28, Lomira girls basketball beat Markesan 67-38 in the second round of the Division 4 WIAA Tournament at home.
Four-seed Lomira (17-9) had a 10-6 lead over five-seed Markesan (18-8) thanks to Josie Christian’s four early points and two made three-pointers from Katie Kretschmer.
The Hornets took a 13-12 lead before J. Christian hit a step-back three-pointer for the Lions to take the lead back at 15-13 in the first half.
Markesan took their final lead of the game at 16-15 when the Lions responded with a 14-3 scoring run led by Kennedy Goebel scoring five points and J. Christian knocking down a three-pointer to increase the Lions’ lead to 26-19.
The Lions held a 28-25 lead with two minutes left in the first half before Goebel and J. Christian combined to score the final five points of the first half to give Lomira a 33-25 halftime lead.
Lomira scored the first ten points of the second half to take control of the playoff game with a 43-25 lead after Kretschmer made her third three-pointer of the game.
The Lions continued their strong play by following the lead of their star freshman J. Christian scoring 11 more points, including three more three-pointers in the second half, and fellow freshman Goebel chipping in six points to pull away from the visiting Hornets with a 62-28 lead when Markesan called a timeout with 7:30 left on the clock.
Lomira finished off the final seven minutes of the game to cruise to a 67-38 playoff victory, which allowed them to advance to play at the one seed, Pardeeville, in the Regional Final.
Josie Christian’s 33 points, including six made three-pointers, led the way for Lomira with Kennedy Goebel adding 16 points in the home tournament win.
At Pardeeville
On March 1, Lomira girls basketball lost 77-60 to the top seed, Pardeeville, in the Division 3 Regional Final to end their 2024-25 season.
Lomira (17-9) was down 8-6 to Pardeeville (22-4) after Josie Christian hit her second three-pointer in the early portion of the first half.
The Bulldogs scored the next seven points before J. Christian made three free throws and Savanna Frea stepped out of the post to knock down a three-pointer to bring the Lions within five points at 17-12.
Pardeeville pushed out their lead to 32-17 with eight minutes on the clock when the Bulldogs started to get into foul trouble, putting the Lions at the free throw line, and J. Christian anticipated a Pardeeville pass to get a steal, which resulted in her speeding down the court for two points to make the score 35-27 in favor of the Bulldogs.
The Bulldogs responded to close out the first half with a 15-6 scoring stretch to take a 50-33 lead going into the halftime break.
J. Christian and Rachel Chervenka got the Lions on the scoreboard after the Bulldogs scored the first four of the second half to put the score at 54-35 with Pardeeville in the lead.
Lomira got a S. Frea basket and five points from Whitney Witkowski to cause the Pardeeville coach to take a timeout with 11:36 left in the game, with the Lions trailing 56-44.
J. Christian scored four consecutive points, including getting another steal for a fast break layup, to get Lomira closer in the game at 59-48 before the Bulldogs scored six straight points to increase their lead back to 65-48.
The Lions’ offense received a Kennedy Goebel three-pointer and S. Frea two-point baskets to get Lomira within 11 points at 65-54 with 5:55 left on the game clock.
Lomira’s J. Christian converted an offensive rebound into two points for a 69-56 score in favor of Pardeeville with 3:51 remaining in the tournament game.
The Bulldogs were able to maintain their lead for the final few minutes to gain the 77-60 victory over the Lions in the Regional Final.
Lomira was led by Josie Christian with 26 points and Savanna Frea with 15 points in the playoff contest.
Freshman Josie Christian finished her season with 592 points, which is the most in a single season in program history.
