Lomira Football Starts Season with a 28-6 Win over Husticon

Posted

On August 22, Lomira football and Horicon/Hustisford football kicked off the 2025 season against each other at Sword Field in Horicon.
The two teams traded punts on their first offensive possessions of the season before Lomira’s (1-0) defense showed why they are the state defending champions with a sack by Blake Steger for a 10-yard loss of Husticon’s (0-1) quarterback Barrett Meyer.
“Our defense was stellar and performed at a high level by applying pressure all night, flying around the ball, and covering well,” said Lomira Head Coach Bryan Gregory. “We definitely have a lot to be proud of with that group, and we’re going to need a lot more of that going forward.
The Lions went on a 55-yard drive on 11 plays, highlighted by a Keegan Kell to Hunter Duley pass for a 12-yard completion to convert on a key third down in the drive.

Lomira’s drive was finished off by a Hunter Schaumberg one-yard rushing touchdown on a fourth down to give the Lions a 7-0 lead with 11:11 on the second quarter clock.
Husticon’s next drive was ended when Meyer threw a deep pass down the left sideline, which was intercepted by Charlie Cole for the Lions and returned to the Lomira 49-yard line.
The Lions weren’t able to capitalize on the turnover and punted the ball back to the Marshfalcons.
Husticon got a first down on Meyer’s completion to Reed Vorlob for 19 yards before Duley tackled Kaleb Hodgson for a four-yard gain on the first play after the first down, and the Lions stopped Meyer on a fourth-down scramble to take the ball back on their own 43-yard line.
Lomira got first downs on their next offensive possession before they were stopped at the Husticon 23-yard line on fourth down.
The Lions’ defense responded by forcing a three-and-out, highlighted by Kolton Wagoner tackling Meyer for a three-yard loss to force a punt before halftime, with Lomira leading 7-0 at the break.
Lomira took possession of the ball first in the second half, and Kell started off the drive with two consecutive runs of 19 and 10 yards for first downs for the Lions.
Kell threw a beautiful pass, which was hauled in by Duley in the end zone for a 29-yard touchdown catch to extend the Lions’ lead to 14-0 at the 9:37 mark in the third quarter.
“Keegan, in his first career start, I thought he managed the game well and kept our team focused even when things weren’t going our way,” said Gregory. “Definitely one that we trust fully to make plays, and I’m excited to see him develop as the season goes on.”
The Marshfalcons got two first downs, featuring a nine-yard run by Meyer before Lomira’s defense rose to stop Husticon on fourth down at the Lions’ 44-yard line.
Lomira showed off their big-play potential with an Elijah James 50-yard burst down the right sideline to put the ball at the Husticon 6-yard line on their first play of their offensive possession.
“We have a plethora of playmakers in the backfield this year, and we have all the confidence in the world in them to step up and make plays when their number is called,” said Gregory. “I thought we had a nice balance last night and were able to share the ball amongst our guys.”
The Lions got a six-yard rushing touchdown from a dancing and weaving Kell run to give Lomira a commanding 21-0 lead in the third quarter.
Husticon started their next possession with a Meyer to Strieff completion for a first down before the Lions’ defense got a big sack from Duley on fourth down for a 15-yard loss, giving Lomira the ball back at the Marshfalcons’ 20-yard line.
Lomira’s Kell scored the next play after a timeout on a 20-yard rushing touchdown to further lead 28-0 with 3:35 left in the third quarter.
The Marshfalcons got a big pass connection from Meyer to Strieff for 30 yards to set up Husticon in scoring position at the Lomira 12-yard line.
The Meyer to Strieff passing connection continued on the next play with a 12-yard passing touchdown to get Husticon on the scoreboard in the third quarter with a score of 28-6 in favor of the Lions.
Lomira’s rushing offense took some time off the fourth quarter clock with two first downs before giving the ball back to Husticon.
Husticon got three first downs on their final possession before the Lions’ pass rush showed up one final time with a sack by Cash Agamite to put the final touch on a good defensive performance from Lomira.
Lomira’s Kell kneeled to finish off the game with a 28-6 season-opening win on the road.
“We had higher expectations for the game, but we saw what we did wrong and can make some adjustments moving forward,” said Husticon Head Coach Tim Meyer.
“Always important to start the season off on a high note and maybe even more so this year,” said Gregory. “We have a new group, but the same expectations for the season, with the start of the second half being where our standard is.”
Lomira will host Oostburg in their home opener on August 29 at 7 p.m.
Husticon will travel to Mayville on August 29 at 7 p.m.
