On September 19, Lomira football defeated Omro 40-0 on a muggy night for their second Flyway Conference victory.
Lomira’s (4-1, 2-1) defense forced a three-and-out on Omro (3-2, 2-1), forcing a punt to give the ball to the Lions at the Foxes’ 40-yard line.
The Lions took advantage of the good field position by scoring on their fourth play of the possession when Keegan Kell started left behind in his offensive line and then cut back against the grain to burst into the end zone at the 6:57 mark in the first quarter to give Lomira a 7-0 lead.
Omro was able to convert a fourth down for a first down before Jamie Duran got under a floating Foxes’ pass to intercept the ball, and proceeded to return the ball 30 yards back to Omro’s 46-yard line.
Lomira received an extra 15 yards due to Omro’s personal foul to put the ball at the Foxes’ 31-yard line, but the Lions threw an interception at the six-yard line to give the ball back to Omro.
The Lomira defense was able to stop the Foxes after one first down, thanks to back-to-back tackles for losses by Hunter Duley and Mason Schelvan to finish the first quarter.
Elijah James provided a big play when he took a handoff, then followed his offensive lineman towards the left sideline to find an opening, which he burst through and outran the entire Omro defense without being touched for an explosive 81-yard rushing touchdown, which energized the entire Lomira team with 11:25 on the second-quarter clock to give the Lions a 14-0 lead.
“We wanted to get back to our style of football and execute the details,” said Head Coach Bryan Gregory. “We were able to get everyone involved and received big plays from a lot of different guys.”
The Lions’ defense proceeded to make a difference on the next Omro drive when Jayden Gibson’s defensive line pressure caused an incompletion.
On the next play, linebacker Blake Steger caught a pass thrown right to him for an interception.
“We knew constant and steady pressure was going to be key for our defense to keep them on their toes,” said Gregory. “We made it uncomfortable in the pocket all night and forced them into costly mistakes... a lot of the credit [goes] to the group upfront with their high motors and relentless pursuit [which] was a huge factor in the outcome of the game.”
Steger returned the intercepted pass 22 yards to the Omro two-yard line, where Hunter Schaumberg scored a two-yard rushing touchdown at the 10:31 mark in the second quarter to increase the Lions’ lead to 20-0.
Lomira’s defense forced another three-and-out on the next Omro possession, giving Lomira the ball back at its own 47-yard line.
The passing game for the Lions got a big play when Kell connected with Charlie Cole for 29 yards, which featured Cole cutting back after catching the ball and sprinting up the field before being tackled by Omro defenders.
Lomira was stopped on fourth down at the Omro 29, ending an opportunity to score another touchdown before halftime.
Steger sacked the Omro quarterback for the Lions to stop the Foxes’ drive after getting two first downs on the final drive before halftime, which saw Lomira take a 20-0 lead into the halftime break.
“Defense was lights out and played their style of football,” said Gregory. “We aim to create chaos for teams and make them go away from their bread and butter, with all 11 players rallying to the ball, and we were relentless all night.”
The Lions got one first down on their first second-half possession before fumbling the ball to Omro at the Foxes’ 43-yard line.
Lomira got its third interception of the night when Steger caught another ball hanging in the night air after Schelvan had heavy pressure on the quarterback.
Steger raced down the field with his second interception and got into the end zone for a crowd-erupting 46-yard touchdown return to expand the Lomira lead to 26-0 with 10:23 left in the third quarter.
“Forcing four turnovers set the offense up with short fields and created a ton of momentum for us,” said Gregory. “Proud of the defense and the shutout!”
The Lions’ defense continued their dominant play with back-to-back tackles for loss by Duley and Cole Geiger, then James to force an Omro punt, which Schaumberg returned for a 27-yard return to the Foxes’ 32-yard line.
Kell and Cole connected on a 12-yard pass play, then two plays later, Schaumberg weaved throughout the Omro defense for a 12-yard rushing touchdown to give Lomira a 33-0 lead at 7:32 in the third quarter.
Omro’s offense got two first downs on back-to-back plays before Lomira’s defense got a sack from Schelvan, who tackled the Foxes’ quarterback before he could even get set in the pocket.
Duley got the Lions’ fourth interception of the game when Alex Zahn tipped the ball into the air and into Duley’s hands, ending Omro’s best drive of the game.
Lomira’s offensive drive started with a Steger 15-yard completion from Kell, and the Lions churned out two first downs before Kolton Wagoner burst through the line for a 36-yard dash into the end zone to give Lomira a commanding 40-0 lead with 11:07 remaining in the game.
Lomira finished off the rest of the game to give the Lions a 40-0 win over the Foxes in their Flyway Conference matchup.
“It says a lot about this group being able to bounce back from adversity and have a great mindset this week,” said Gregory. “We wanted to come out and get back to our style of football with our players executing our system while playing with confidence and poise.”
“We took a step forward Friday night and will continue to climb every week,” said Gregory.
Lomira football will travel to Laconia on September 26 at 7 p.m.
