On September 5, Lomira football defeated rival Campbellsport 35-8 to win their conference opener and to retain the rivalry axe for the second straight year.
Campbellsport (1-2, 0-1) started the game with an onside kick attempt, but Lomira (3-0, 1-0) was ready for the attempt when sophomore Camden Schromen recovered the ball for the Lions at their own 49-yard line.
“Big time play by Camden to be ready and alert from the get-go. That very easily could have swung the entire trajectory of the game,” said Head Coach Bryan Gregory. “Awesome to see him make an impact play for us and get some love from his teammates and coaches.”
Lomira received a big play when Hunter Schaumberg weaved his way through the Campbellsport defense for an energizing 37-yard rush to the Cougars’ 14-yard line on the second play from scrimmage in the game.
Elijah James scored four plays later for the Lions on a one-yard rushing touchdown to give Lomira a 7-0 lead with 8:02 on the first quarter clock.
The Lions’ defense forced a three-and-out from the Cougars to give Lomira the ball back at the Campbellsport 39-yard line. The Lions got a big pass play when Keegan Kell rolled out of the pocket to find a wide-open Charlie Cole for a 17-yard gain.
Schaumberg showed off his strength as a freshman running back by carrying defenders on his back for a 13-yard gain to set up a Kell two-yard rushing touchdown to extend the lead to 14-0 over the Cougars with 3:12 left in the first quarter.
Lomira’s running game got going again with a burst from James for 29 yards and a tough 10-yard run from Schaumberg after the two teams exchanged punts for the next three possessions.
The offensive line of Brock Brietlow, Cole Geiger, Lane Pastorius, Kincade Todl, and Trent Kulczewski was paving the way for the Lions’ offense, with Lomira rushing for 285 yards in the game.
“Our offensive line just keeps getting better and better with Friday night being a physical game, and they stepped up to the plate and knocked it out of the park,” said Gregory. “When we execute our system, good things happen, with all the credit to our line and the way they played for us all night long.”
Kell was scrambling out of the pocket when he threw a pass towards the Lomira sideline, which was hauled in by Cole with nice effort coming back to make a catch of 18 yards to fire up the Lions’ players and coaches.
The Lions got a three-yard rushing touchdown from Kell with 1:49 left on the first-half clock to give Lomira a 21-0 lead.
Campbellsport got a 38-yard kick return to give the Cougars some life before halftime, but the Lions’ defense stopped Campbellsport on fourth down, giving the ball back to Lomira at their 36-yard line.
Kell made one of the few mistakes in the game for Lomira when he threw an interception to Campbellsport linebacker Carter Gellings, giving the ball back to the Cougars at the Lomira 33-yard line with 45 seconds left in the half.
The Lions’ defense rose up to the occasion, putting pressure on the quarterback on first down by Kell, then a press break up by Aidan Campbell on second down, and finally causing a near interception from Kolton Wagoner with heavy pressure from defensive lineman Kulczewski on fourth down.
“I can’t say enough good things about our defense and defensive staff. They are an extremely hard-working group that knows the game plan and executes play in and play out, setting the tone for us, and they are playing well right now,” said Gregory.
Lomira took a 21-0 lead into halftime on youth night for the program, with the high school coaches and players supporting the young players as they were introduced on the field at halftime.
“...Being able to give back and bring excitement to the program is always enjoyable,” said Gregory. “Our youth program is top-notch and is a huge reason for our success. Bringing everyone together and uniting the program is important to me.”
The Lions stopped Campbellsport on the first possession of the second half, thanks to a Cole Geiger tackle for a three-yard loss of the Cougars’ ball carrier, but Lomira punted the ball back to the Cougars on their next drive.
Campbellsport got a 39-yard passing play on third down to set up a one-yard rushing touchdown from their quarterback Jackson Straub, and the Cougars got a two-point conversion from Gellings to make the score 21-8 in favor of Lomira with 3:11 on the third-quarter clock.
Lomira responded to the Cougars’ touchdown with a 65-yard drive capped off by Kell’s third touchdown on the night with a one-yard touchdown at the 8:05 mark in the fourth quarter.
The Lions’ defense caused their first turnover of the game after a Wagoner sack on third down, when Geiger caught a tipped pass for an interception on fourth down with Lomira taking over at the Cougars’ 47-yard line.
Lomira proceeded to run the ball with Wagoner from the running back position, where he gained 38 yards on four strong carries, and Wagoner finished off the drive with a two-yard plunge into the end zone, giving the Lions a 35-8 lead with 2:13 left in the game.
“Kolton is the heart and soul of the team by playing defense with such a high motor and making play after play when needed, and offensively, he has a thankless job opening up holes for his teammates,” said Gregory. “We wanted to reward him by getting some touches for him, and it was awesome to see him get into the end zone.”
Campbellsport’s final drive was stopped by a sack from Blake Steger to give Lomira a 35-8 win in their conference opener.
“A lot of pride comes with beating Campbellsport and keeping the axe in Lomira,” said Gregory. “Each week is an opportunity to have success, continue to get better, and inch closer to our ultimate goal.”
Lomira football travels to play St. Mary’s Springs Academy on September 12 at 7 p.m.
