On September 12, Lomira football lost 17-0 to St. Mary’s Springs Academy on the road at Fruth Field in Fond du Lac for their first loss of the season.
Springs (3-1, 2-0) drove the ball for 53 yards on the first offensive drive of the game, which was capped off by a seven-yard touchdown run to take a 7-0 lead over Lomira at the 5:53 mark in the first quarter.
“We understand the importance of getting off to a fast start and setting the tone, but we were unable to do that this week and let Springs dictate the tone of the game,” said Head Coach Bryan Gregory.
Lomira’s first offensive drive ended after three plays when a low snap resulted in a loss of nine yards on third down, causing the Lions to punt the ball.
The Lions’ defense stood up on the next possession, causing a three-and-out, highlighted by a Jayden Gibson tackle for a one-yard loss.
Lomira punted the ball back to Springs after three plays, and the Ledgers responded by hitting a 42-yard pass play, getting Springs into the red zone.
Springs closed a one-yard rushing touchdown to extend their lead to 14-0 with 9:37 left in the first half.
The two defenses held both opposing offenses at bay during the rest of the first half, resulting in a 14-0 Ledgers lead over the Lions at halftime.
The second half started the same way as the first half ended, with each of the defenses showing their strength by causing four straight punts in the game.
Lomira got a big play from their special teams when Blake Steger broke through Springs’ punt formation to block the punt, and the blocked ball was recovered by Aiden Campbell, giving the ball back to the Lions at the Ledgers’ 44-yard line.
“The block gave us some momentum and hope when we needed something to go our way,” said Gregory. “Blake is a confident player out on the field and affects the game in a lot of different ways and is going to keep getting better as he gains more experience.”
The Lions got a first down to start the drive on a nice throw from quarterback Keegan Kell to Alex Zahn, but Lomira wasn’t able to build on that play when the Lions fumbled on the next play, giving the Ledgers the ball back at the Lomira 35-yard line.
Lomira’s defense stepped up after the turnover, getting a four-yard tackle for a loss by Hunter Duley, which was caused by Steger putting pressure on the Ledgers’ quarterback on the pitch to the running back.
“Our defense settled in nicely and played well down the stretch by keeping the game close, but we were just unable to capitalize on any momentum and made too many mistakes across the board,” said Gregory.
The Lions fumbled the ensuing punt after their latest defensive stop, which resulted in the Ledgers kicking a 33-yard field goal, giving Springs a 17-0 lead with 9:34 left in the game.
Lomira completed seven passes and gained 64 total yards of offense before being stopped in the red zone by the Ledgers’ defense, stopping the Lions’ last opportunity to get points on the scoreboard in the battle of ranked Flyway Conference teams.
Springs secured the 17-0 win over the Lions, giving Lomira their first loss in their conference matchup.
“We will learn from this and come back better because of it,” said Gregory. “The adversity is exactly what we need to fuel us moving forward, and we knew Friday night was going to be a good test for where we are currently at as a team.”
“We’re not quite there yet, but I have all the faith that we will get there,” said Gregory. “I believe in this group and know they will respond in a big way!”
Lomira football will host Omro on September 19 at 7 p.m.
