On September 26, Lomira football beat Laconia 35-0 on the road for their second consecutive conference shutout.
Lomira (5-1, 3-1) started their opening drive of the game at their own 49-yard line after a nice kick return by Aidan Campbell to start the game.
The Lions got the drive going with an Elijah James 12-yard run, and got another first down on the drive when quarterback Keegan Kell connected with James for a 14-yard gain.
Kell gained the final 31 yards of the drive on two consecutive carries, finishing off with a 13-yard run into the end zone for a 7-0 lead for the Lions at the 7:42 mark in the first quarter.
Laconia (2-4, 1-3) was forced into a three-and-out on their first offensive possession thanks to a three-yard tackle for loss by Kolton Wagoner on first down.
Lomira’s offense punted the ball back to the Spartans, but the Lions’ defense responded with a couple of big plays, including Hunter Duley getting a sack for an eight-yard loss on second down after Laconia converted two first downs.
Duley was aided on his sack by heavy initial pressure from defensive lineman Mason Schelvan and secondary pressure by Trent Kulczewski.
“The defensive line has done a great job all year for us and takes pride in the details, with the attention to detail being evident, and I couldn’t be prouder of this group,” said Head Coach Bryan Gregory. “Constant pressure leads to rushed decisions and inevitable mistakes.”
One of those pressure mistakes from the Lomira defense came on the next play on third down, when Campbell intercepted a rushed, floating pass from the Spartans’ quarterback and sprinted down in front of the Lions’ sideline, returning the ball to the Laconia 27-yard line with a couple of seconds left in the first quarter.
“The interception kept the momentum in our favor,” said Gregory. “[It] helped us jump out to an early two-score lead.”
Kell burst through the left side of the Spartans’ defense and cut back at the five-yard line to score a 27-yard touchdown for the Lions on the first play after the turnover, and to close out the first quarter with a 14-0 lead over Laconia.
Lomira’s defense forced another three-and-out possession for the Spartans, giving the ball back to the Lions’ offense.
The Lions got an explosive play on their next offensive drive, when Kell threw a deep pass over 30 yards in the air, which hit wide receiver Charlie Cole in the hands, and after the ball bounced slightly into the night air, it was secured by Cole for the catch.
Cole sprinted down the field towards the end zone for a crowd-jolting 74-yard receiving touchdown with 6:59 left in the second quarter to give Lomira a 21-0 lead.
Laconia’s punter bobbled the snap, and the Lomira special teams tackled him at the Lions’ 12-yard line, giving Lomira great field position at the 5:27 mark in the second quarter, with the opportunity to increase their lead in the game.
The Spartans’ defense stopped Lomira on fourth down inside the five-yard line, but the Lions’ defense had an impressive stand by almost getting a safety on second and third downs of the possession, pushing Laconia back to their one-yard line.
Lomira got another explosive pass play when Kell found Hunter Schaumberg running wide open down the left sideline for a 29-yard passing touchdown, which Schaumberg finished off the play by running over the Laconia defender at the five-yard line to score the touchdown to extend the Lomira lead to 28-0 with 45 seconds left in the first half.
“Laconia’s defense is solid and causes matchup issues with their physical and fast downhill approach, but we accomplished exactly what we needed to in the pass game to slow down their constant pressure and be able to move the ball,” said Gregory. “We had a few plays in our back pocket, and the team went out and executed them to perfection.”
Kell’s big night with 214 total yards and four touchdowns ended when he left the game for Lomira with 4:22 on the third quarter clock.
“Keegan just keeps getting better and better at being a gamer that shines bright when we need him the most,” said Gregory. “His execution during the game was exactly what we needed to get the early lead and keep it with big play after big play. We love the ball in his hands.”
Lomira’s defense continued to hold the Laconia offense at bay in the second half, led by Schelvan, Duley, Jayden Gibson, and Blake Steger, who provided constant pressure and combined for four sacks in the game.
The Lions scored the only touchdown in the second half, when Wagoner broke through the line of scrimmage and sprinted down the right sideline for a 45-yard rushing touchdown with 6:11 left in the game to balloon the Lomira lead to 35-0 over the Spartans.
Lomira walked off the field with a commanding 35-0 conference win over Laconia for their two consecutive shutouts.
“Never easy to go on the road, but I thought we got off to a fast start and controlled the first half in all aspects of the game in a tough environment,” said Gregory. “Definitely things we still need to work on and clean up moving forward.”
Lomira football will host North Fond du Lac on October 3 at 7 p.m. for their homecoming game.
