Lomira Football Falls to Vikings on Senior Night

Posted

On October 10, Lomira football lost 28-7 to Winnebago Lutheran Academy (WLA) on Senior Night for Hunter Duley, Kincade Todl, Kolton Wagoner, Jayden Gibson, and Issac Jimenez.
“The senior class has brought in and done everything we have asked of them,” said Head Coach Bryan Gregory. “They take a lot of pride in continuing to uphold the standard and culture we have worked so hard to create within the program.”
“The seniors have stepped up into bigger leadership roles and playing roles this season,” said Gregory. “They’re a fun group to work with and are always striving to get better.”
Lomira’s (6-2, 4-2) offensive drive was stopped after three plays, and WLA (5-3, 5-1) followed suit when Mason Schelvan and Hunter Duley combined to tackle the Vikings’ running back for a one-yard loss on third down.

The Lions got a big play when Hunter Schaumberg had a nice cut during his run to get to the left sideline and burst down the sideline in front of the Vikings’ bench for a 41-yard gain, getting the ball to the WLA 42-yard line.
Lomira wasn’t able to convert another first down on the drive and punted the ball back to the Vikings.
The Lions’ defense controlled WLA on their next offensive possession with Duley’s tackle for a loss and Blake Steger providing pressure on third down, causing an incompletion on third down.
Lomira got a first down when Keegan Kell found Alex Zahn on the sideline when rolling out, and Zahn did an impressive tiptoe balancing act to come down with the catch.
WLA stopped the Lions on fourth-and-two with one minute left in the first quarter at their own 20-yard line, and the Vikings got their first big play of the game when their quarterback Gannan Schwartz burst through the middle of the Lomira defense and sprinted 63 yards into the end zone to give WLA a 7-0 lead with 11:05 on the second-quarter clock.
Duley got a 16-yard gain on a jet sweep to get the Lions a first down, but the drive resulted in a punt after five offensive plays.
The Vikings were forced off the field after three plays thanks to pressure by linebacker Kolton Wagoner on third down.
The Lions had their best drive of the game, converting three first downs, highlighted by runs of 24 yards by Schaumberg and a 13-yard run by Kell to get the ball to the Vikings’ seven-yard line.
WLA’s defense made another fourth-down stop when the Vikings stopped Lomira after the Lions drove 65 yards on nine plays to maintain their 7-0 first-half lead.
Lomira’s defense ended the first half with a sack by linebacker Steger on third down, getting the teams into the halftime break with WLA holding a 7-0 lead.
The Vikings drove the ball 78 yards, aided by 25 yards on penalties, to score a 10-yard rushing touchdown to take a 14-0 lead with 7:50 in the third quarter.
The Lions were forced to punt after three plays, which gave the Vikings the ball back at their own 32-yard line.
WLA continued their impressive start of the second half by scoring on a 28-yard passing touchdown from Schwartz on a third down and 11 to give WLA a 21-0 lead with 1:20 left in the third quarter.
Lomira got a 48-yard kickoff return from Aidan Campbell to give the Lions good field position at the WLA 38-yard line to start their next offensive possession.
Kell located a wide-open Charlie Cole on a 34-yard pass play on third down to get the Lions down to the one-yard line, where Schaumberg finished off the drive with a one-yard touchdown to start the fourth quarter, putting the score 21-7 in favor of WLA.
“Hunter is playing extremely well right now and is looking very comfortable out on the field,” said Gregory. “He’s patient to set up his blocks and is starting to understand when to turn the speed on and separate from the defense.”
The Vikings got a 45-yard pass play from Schwartz to set up WLA in Lomira territory, and the Vikings finished the final 27 yards on the ground, being capped off by a one-yard touchdown run from Schwartz to give WLA a 28-7 lead with 4:59 left in the game.
Lomira was able to get one final first down from Kell, connecting with Cole for 14 yards before WLA got the ball back to kneel down for a 28-7 conference victory over Lomira.
“We played well in stretches but weren’t able to capitalize at crucial turning points throughout the game,” said Gregory. “We had too many mistakes to compete with a high cailber team like WLA. We will need to learn from this and continue to strive to get better.”
Lomira will travel to Mayville for their regular-season finale on October 17 at 7 p.m.
