Lomira Football Dominates Oostburg 35-0 in Home Opener

Posted

On August 29, the Lomira football team showcased the strength of its program with a 35-0 shutout win over a playoff team from the previous year in Oostburg.
“Our culture and standard are at the forefront of what we do by taking pride in the details and the process,” said Head Coach Bryan Gregory. “There are no shortcuts to success, and we need to stay hungry and stay committed to the little things day in and day out.”
Lomira (2-0) methodically drove down the field in their first possession of the game, featuring 11 plays resulting in 72 rushing yards led by their quarterback Keegan Kell for 39 yards on the drive, and running backs Elijah James and Hunter Schaumberg combining for the other 33 yards, which was capped off by James’ two-yard rushing touchdown with 5:24 in the first quarter to give the Lions a 7-0 lead.
The Lions’ defense forced a three-and-out to get the ball back for their offense at midfield, and the Lomira offense responded with a screen pass from Kell to James, who burst up the middle of the Oostburg defense and outran the Dutchmen defense for a 50-yard touchdown to increase the Lions’ lead to 14-0 with 1:34 left in the first quarter.

“I was beyond excited for Eli to come out and have a breakout performance,” said Gregory. “It’s rewarding to see all the hard work he puts in behind the scenes to be on full display in the front of our awesome home crowd.”
Oostburg’s next offensive drive was disrupted by pressure from defensive lineman Jayden Gibson, which caused a floating throw from the Dutchmen quarterback, and Lomira defensive back Charlie Cole snagged the ball for an interception for the Lions.
Lomira was stopped on fourth down at the Oostburg 43-yard line after the turnover, but the Lions’ defense came up with another turnover when Hunter Duley ripped the ball away from a Dutchmen receiver after a completed pass, giving the ball back to Lomira at the Oostburg 40-yard line.
The Lions got a big play from their passing game when Kell connected with Duley on a deep strike up the middle seam for 44 yards, putting the ball at the Dutchmen’s 2-yard line.
James scored his third touchdown of the game with a two-yard rushing touchdown to expand the Lions’ lead to 21-0 with 6:51 in the second quarter.
“The offense was in sync from the opening snap, and I can’t say enough about the job the big boys did up front. Their physicality was a huge point of emphasis for us,” said Gregory. “Our playmakers were on full display as well when their number was called.”
Lomira’s offense got the ball back after forcing another punt from Oostburg, and Lomira drove 41 yards in six plays, with the drive finished off by a Kell four-yard rushing touchdown to further their lead to 28-0 with two minutes before halftime.
Oostburg’s offense was shut down by the Lomira defense at the start of the second half, thanks to a nine-yard sack by Kolton Wagoner with original pressure caused by Gibson.
“Jayden’s first step and speed off the line is tough to handle, and he has worked so hard to put himself in the position he is in right now,” said Gregory.
The Lions got their final score of the game when Kell swung the ball out to Cole, who then burst down the left sideline, balancing perfectly to stay in bounds, to score a 34-yard touchdown for a commanding 35-0 lead for Lomira with 6:53 on the third-quarter clock.
“Charlie is an exceptional athlete who is gaining more confidence as he grows more comfortable in our system, and every time the ball is in his hands, good things happen,” said Gregory.
Oostburg’s final chance to get on the scoreboard in the game was stopped when Cole Geiger came in to sack the Dutchmen quarterback on fourth down at the Lomira 41-yard line.
“Our defense picked up right where they left off last week with being tough, physical, and gritty all night,” said Gregory. “They take a lot of pride in a shutout and earned it every play on Friday night.”
Lomira walked off the field with an impressive 35-0 win in their home opener to improve to 2-0 on the young season.
“The growth this group showed from week one to week two was impressive with so many positives to build off of,” said Gregory. “I am extremely proud of the way we played from beginning to end to make it a statement victory for us.”
Lomira football will host Campbellsport on September 5 at 7 p.m. to start their conference season schedule.
