On October 3, Lomira football defeated North Fond du Lac (NFDL) 49-8 on a very warm homecoming night for the Lions.
NFDL (0-7, 0-5) attempted an onside kick to start the game, but Lomira (6-1, 4-1) recovered the kick at their own 49-yard line.
The Lions were facing a third down on their first possession when quarterback Keegan Kell found Kolton Wagoner in the flat, and Wagoner did the rest with a 53-yard sprint into the end zone, giving Lomira an early 7-0 lead over the Orioles at the 10:22 mark in the first quarter.
Lomira’s defense started the game strong when Mason Schelvan tackled the Orioles’ running back for a one-yard loss, which helped the Lions stop NFDL on three downs to get the ball back for Lomira.
Hunter Schaumberg returned a punt for 21 yards to the NFDL 29-yard line, and the Lions capitalized on the good field position by scoring on three plays capped off by an Elijah James three-yard rushing touchdown with 7:16 in the first quarter to increase Lomira’s lead to 14-0.
NFDL was stopped after three offensive plays on their next drive, highlighted by a two-yard tackle for a loss from linebacker Blake Steger for the Lions.
Lomira threw an interception on their first play of their possession, and the Orioles returned the ball to the Lions’ 49-yard line.
The Orioles couldn’t capitalize on the good field position when Hunter Duley and Schelvan combined to tackle the NFDL running back for a three-yard loss on first down, and then Steger almost intercepted an errant Orioles pass to stop the NFDL drive on fourth down.
Schaumberg burst through the Orioles’ defense for a strong 35-yard rush to the 14-yard line, which Duley converted into a one-yard rushing touchdown after hauling in a 13-yard pass from Kell to push the Lions’ lead to 21-0 with 1:12 left in the first quarter.
NFDL converted two first downs before they were stuffed by a pack of Lions’ defenders on fourth down at the Lomira 41-yard line.
James broke through for a 23-yard rush on third down to set up another big play from the Lions with Schaumberg hauling in Kell’s 26-yard pass, and Schaumberg was elusive to start his journey downfield before he bullied his way to the edge of the goal line for Lomira.
Schaumberg got into the end zone on the next play with a one-yard touchdown to extend the Lions’ lead to 28-0 at the 4:11 mark in the second quarter.
“Elijah, Hunter, and Kolton are extremely talented and bring something different to the table,” said Head Coach Bryan Gregory. “We can attack teams in so many different ways and keep fresh legs to keep the attack going all four quarters.”
NFDL burned off the final four minutes of the first half on offense, with Lomira going into the halftime break with a 28-0 lead over the Orioles.
The Orioles punted after three plays to give Lomira the ball back at the NFDL 37-yard line, and the next Lions drive featured two runs for first downs by James, with the last one going for 19 yards with a pulling lineman, Kincade Todl, escorting James to the two-yard line.
James scored his second touchdown of the game from the two-yard line for a commanding 35-0 lead for Lomira at 6:09 in the third quarter.
The Lions’ defense stopped the Orioles on fourth down at the NFDL’s own 19-yard line, giving Lomira great field position.
Wagoner took the handoff in the backfield and made a nice cutback at the 15-yard line to his use speed to get into the end zone to further the Lions’ lead to 42-0 with 1:40 left in the third quarter.
NFDL got their only big play of the game with a 69-yard passing touchdown, which was after Lomira took their starters out of the Flyway Conference contest to put the score at 42-8 in favor of the Lions.
It was the first touchdown allowed by the Lions’ defense in the last 13 quarters since September 12.
“[We] Always pride ourselves on winning the field position battle and keeping teams out of the end zone,” said Gregory.
Lomira wasted no time getting refocused on the game when Wagoner broke off on a 35-yard rush, which helped set up a 13-yard rushing touchdown from Schaumberg to make the score 49-8 with the Lions holding the lead with 7:45 remaining in the game.
“Friday night allowed us the opportunity to get a ton of kids meaningful reps at the varsity level,” said Gregory. “Always nice to be able to reward the ones who work hard at practice.”
NFDL held possession of the ball for the remainder of the game, which saw Lomira leave the field with a 49-8 homecoming win for their fourth win in conference out of five tries.
“Always nice to get a victory in front of a packed house,” said Gregory. “We accomplished what we needed to and got out healthy.”
Lomira football will host Winnebago Lutheran Academy on October 10 at 7 p.m.
