On November 25, Lomira boys basketball defeated Horicon 81-63 in the season opener for both teams.
Jake Broeske scored the first two points of the game for Lomira (1-0) in his first game since his knee injury ended his junior season after seven games.
“...Jake played his floor, and we expect him to keep getting better and better every day, but it is going to take time for him to get back into game shape and get used to the physicality,” said Head Coach Nick Kohler.
Barrett Meyer’s layup for Horicon (0-1) and a Quinlin Jackl three-pointer gave the Marshmen an early 6-4 lead.
The Lions went on a 13-2 run, highlighted by three-pointers from Broeske at the top of the key, Charlie Cole deep behind the three-point line, and Blake Steger from the wing to give Lomira a 17-8 lead over Horicon.
It was the Marshmen’s turn to make a run in the game by draining three shots from three-point land with two of the makes from Christian Schwartz to close the gap on the scoreboard to 22-17 with 8:30 on the first-half clock.
Logan Robenhorst’s basket closed the gap even further to 26-23 before the Lions went on an impressive 22-1 scoring run, which was started by their defense and also showed off their three-point shooting proficiency with four makes, including two from Cole, with the last one coming from deep range to give Lomira an impressive 48-24 halftime lead.
Lomira’s impressive run continued in the start of the second half with a corner three-pointer from Kell to cap off their 25-1 scoring stretch of play.
“That was the best stretch of the game, but it started with our defense,” said Kohler. “When we get stops and can play fast in transition, that is when we are at our best.”
The Marshmen got old-fashioned three-point plays from Meyer and Jay Graven to put the score at 53-30 in favor of the Lions.
Another Kell three-pointer from the corner put the score at 68-45 with less than eight minutes left in the game, which was followed by Christian Schwartz knocking his fourth three-pointer of the game for the Marshmen to make the score 68-50 with Lomira in the lead.
Jake Broeske dunked after a Lions’ timeout, and Maddox Bodden made a nice turnaround jumper in the lane to put Lomira back up by the score of 72-50.
The Lions made their 12th three-pointer of the game when Kell knocked his fourth make from long range to give Lomira a 79-54 lead.
“Shooting is definitely a strength of ours, and our success didn’t surprise me,” said Kohler.
The Marshmen finished the game on a 9-2 scoring run. The game ended with an 81-63 Lomira victory in Head Coach Nick Kohler’s first game as a varsity coach.
“It feels great to get the first win, but it makes it better to do it with a great group of kids and coaches,” said Kohler.
Horicon was led by Barrett Meyer’s 19 points and Christian Schwartz’s 17 points in their season-opening game.
Lomira was led by Keegan Kell’s 18 points and Jake Broeske’s 16 points in their season-opening win.
Horicon boys basketball hosted Wayland on December 2, after print time, and then will host Hustisford on December 5 at 7:15 p.m.
Lomira boys basketball will host WLA on December 4 at 7 p.m.
