On March 4, Lomira boys’ basketball beat the 12-seed Necedah 95-27 in the first round of the Division 4 WIAA Tournament.
Five-seed Lomira (19-8) jumped out to a 17-0 lead over Necedah (3-18), led by Keegan Kell and Jackson Goebel three-pointers for the Lions.
Hunter Duley’s defense got one fast-break basket for himself and another one set up for Blake Steger. Lomira’s defense causing turnovers translated into a 27-6 lead led by easy layups for the Lions.
Lomira’s Charlie Cole was in the midst of his big offensive night for the Lions, draining a three-pointer and turning a steal into two more points for the Lions, which extended the Lomira lead to 32-8.

The Lions increased their first-half lead to 40-10 after another fast-break layup, this time from Jackson Bloohm.
Lomira continued their red-hot shooting by making 12 three-pointers in the first half, highlighted by Cole making seven of those threes for 23 points to push the Lions’ lead out to 51-17 at the halftime break of the tournament game.
The Lions continued their dominate play in the second half by using their defense against the visiting Necedah players and with even more three-point shooting by making nine more three-pointers, led by Cole scoring 11 more points in the second half to give the Cardinals no hope in the second half.
Lomira finished the game with a total of 21 three-pointers made as a team in the game to get a very dominating 95-27 first-round playoff win to advance into the second round at four-seed Dodgeland on March 7.
“Necedah’s zone coverage was focused on our inside offense [rather] than the outside offense, and we were able to shoot with confidence then by knocking them down,” said Head Coach Dan Domask.
Charlie Cole made a very impressive 10 threes in the tournament game to finish the game with a career-high 34 points for the Lions.
Keegan Kell had a strong shooting game with five three-pointers for 15 points in the playoff game.
At Dodgeland
On March 7, Lomira boys basketball beat four-seed Dodgeland 60-37 in a convincing road playoff win in the second round of the Division 4 WIAA Tournament.
Lomira (19-8) had a good start in their playoff matchup against Dodgeland (16-9) with an early 12-3 lead, featuring threes from Keegan Kell and Dalton Zingsheim.
Zingsheim scored five more points, including a second three-pointer, to force Dodgeland to take a timeout, trailing 21-8 to the Lions with 10:30 on the first-half clock.
The Lions continued their strong play, especially on the defensive end, allowing the Lomira offense to be patient, resulting in a 29-15 lead, highlighted by Jackson Goebel scoring on a nice cut in an out-of-bounds set for Lomira.
Kell made a three-pointer in the corner to give Lomira a 32-21 halftime lead after Dodgeland had a little scoring run.
Lomira had a 38-27 lead when Kell drained his third three-pointer of the game, followed by Sam Schraufnagel bringing his football toughness to the basketball court by taking a charge, and then two straight strong finishes playing off contact in the paint to give the Lions a commanding 45-27 lead on the road.
Dodgeland tried to get back in the game with the score at 47-34 before Zingheim finished in the paint, and then Hunter Duley scored a basket after a very good offensive possession for the Lions to make the score 53-35 in favor of the Lions with 3:05 on the game clock.
The last highlight of the game was Schraufnagel faking out the entire Trojans defense with a pass fake to give himself a clear path to the basket, resulting in a 56-36 Lomira lead.
Lomira closed out the game on the free-throw line to secure their second-round playoff win with a 60-37 victory.
Keegan Kell scored 15 points, and Dalton Zingsheim added 13 points to help the Lions secure the playoff victory on the road.
At Pardeeville
On March 8, Lomira boys’ basketball beat the one-seed Pardeeville 62-58 in overtime to advance to the Sectional Semifinals.
Pardeeville (24-2) held a 9-8 lead over Lomira (19-8) before the Lions erupted for 17 consecutive points over the next seven minutes, featuring their tough team defense and quality outside shooting with threes from Charlie Cole and Jackson Goebel to take a 25-9 lead over the Bulldogs.
“I felt going into the game we had the chance to defend well enough to take away the looks that they usually get and are comfortable with,” said Head Coach Dan Domask. “I thought we stunned them just a bit in order to get them to start second-guessing themselves for at least a stretch of time, which correlated with being able to hit a few shots of our own.”
Lomira held a 25-13 halftime lead after Pardeeville scored the final four points of the first half.
The Lions extended their lead to 30-15 early in the second half thanks to Cole having a strong drive in the lane for a two-point layup and a Keegan Kell three-pointer before Pardeeville went on a 13-3 scoring stretch to tighten the game at 33-28 with 12:34 on the second-half clock.
Hunter Duley knocked down back-to-back three-pointers, which was followed by a Kell leaner in the lane to push the Lions’ lead back to 41-30 over Pardeeville.
The Bulldogs went on a mini-run of 7-2 before Sam Schraufnagel converted an offensive rebound for Lomira into two points to put the score at 45-37 in favor of the Lions.
Pardeeville was able to tie the game at 47 with 3:30 left in regulation before Cole scored on a nice backdoor cut for two points, then Duley scored a basket after a Lomira timeout to give the Lions a 51-47 lead with 1:20 on the game clock.
The Lions held a 51-49 lead when Pardeeville forced a Lomira turnover with 41.3 seconds showing on the clock.
Pardeeville was able to tie the game at 51 when their runner in the lane banked off the backboard for two points which was followed by a timeout with 36.6 seconds left in regulation.
Lomira ran down the clock to give themselves the final opportunity to win the game in regulation with Goebel raising up for an open jumper, which just missed the mark, then he got his own offensive rebound for another chance in the last couple of seconds but the second shot wasn’t meant to be resulting in overtime in the Regional Final.
The Bulldogs scored the first two points of the overtime period before Goebel scored a runner in the lane to tie the game at 53.
Schraufnagel made two pressure free throws to make the score 56-55 after Pardeeville had hit a three-pointer on the previous possession.
Pardeeville made two free throws to take a 58-55 lead with 1:39 left in the game before Schraufnagel went back to the free throw line with the Lions in bonus.
Lomira’s Schraufnagel proceeded to knock down both free throws in a calm matter to tighten the game back at 58-57 with 1:20 on the overtime clock.
The Bulldogs were passing and dribbling the ball around trying to finish off the final minute of overtime or until the Lions had to foul them to extend the game.
The Lions’ senior guard Goebel darted in the passing lane of the Bulldogs to steal the win with his speedy dash down the court for a tournament-shining moment by finishing his breakaway with two points for Lomira but, more importantly, a 59-58 lead with less than 30 seconds left in the game.
Lomira’s defense got a stop on the next Pardeeville possession then a Bulldogs foul put Duley on the free-throw line where he converted one of his two free throws for a 60-58 Lomira lead.
Pardeeville missed their extra opportunity to tie the game when the basketball fell out of bounds off the Bulldogs, giving the ball back to the Lions, and another foul resulted in putting Cole on the free-throw line to seal the game for the Lions.
Cole drained both of his regional championship-clinching free throws to give Lomira a 62-58 lead with 4.9 seconds left in overtime.
“I was extremely satisfied with our ability to manage the game in overtime and not let their lead sink us. We kept with our game plan by getting looks, hitting our free throws, and defensively being able to put trapping pressure on and still protect the hoop, which eventually allowed us to get the steal that gave us back the lead,” said Domask.
Lomira boys’ basketball players, coaches, and fans celebrated their impressive 62-58 road tournament win by advancing to Sectionals for the first time since 2000.
“I made a point to step back from the celebrating crowd to watch all those in attendance celebrating together,” said Domask. “For me, that was very meaningful to be a part of bringing that joy to the good people of Lomira.”
Charlie Cole’s 14 points and Jackson Goebel’s 13 points paved the way in the Regional Final victory.
Five-seed Lomira boys’ basketball will play two-seeded Marshall on Thursday, March 13, at Beaver Dam High School in the Division 4 Sectional Semifinal of the WIAA Tournament at 7 p.m.
