Lomira Boys Basketball Finishes Season in Sectionals

Posted

On March 13, Lomira boys’ basketball lost 77-58 to Marshall in a great atmosphere for basketball at Beaver Dam High School in the Division 4 Sectional Semifinals.
Five-seed Lomira (19-9) and second-seed Marshall (21-6) had previous tournament history in big games with the 1995 Lomira team beating Marshall in a win to go to sectionals and Marshall defeating the 2000 Lomira team in the state semifinals.
The two school bands provided exciting performances during warmups to get the two talented teams and supportive crowds ready for the sectional playoff tilt.
The Lions got out to a 6-5 lead over Marshall after three-pointers from Charlie Cole and Keegan Kell, which got the packed gym energized early in the game.

Lomira scored four straight points, highlighted by a Jackson Goebel leaner in the paint to take a 10-9 lead over the Cardinals.
The Lions showed off their explosive offense during the next four minutes by going on an 11-4 run with threes from Cole and Dalton Zingsheim to send the Lomira crowd into a frenzied state with a 22-15 lead.
Keegan Kell drained a three-pointer to put the Lions’ lead at 25-19, then Marshall proceeded to finish the half on a 12-4 run in the final four minutes of the game to get a 31-29 halftime lead in a very physical and competitive first half.
Lomira came out of the halftime break by making back-to-back threes from Kell and Cole to take a 35-31 lead over Marshall.
Marshall fought back with their defensive pressure and effort to take a 43-37 lead with 12 minutes left in the game before Kell hit his fourth three-pointer to tighten the game back to 43-40.
The Cardinals went on to score nine consecutive points to push their lead to 52-40 but then Goebel scored a layup to temporarily stop Marshall’s run with the score at 52-42 with eight minutes on the game clock.
Marshall made back-to-back threes before Zingsheim knocked down a three-point shot after a Sam Schraufnagel offensive rebound to make the score 58-45 with six minutes left in regulation.
The Lions wouldn’t go down without a fight as Goebel made two three-pointers for the Lions to give them some final hope at 64-51 with 4:43 left in the game, but then Marshall was awarded a timeout when the Cardinals’ player was up in the air to keep possession of the ball and scored after the timeout.
The Lions got a fifth three made from Kell to put the score at 68-56 in favor of Marshall with 2:35 showing on the clock.
Marshall finished off the final two minutes of the game to gain a hard-fought 77-58 sectional semifinal victory over Lomira.
The Lions were led by Keegan Kell’s 17 points and Jackson Goebel’s 10 points in the playoff matchup.
