Lomira Boys Basketball Defeats Horicon as Goebel scores his 1000th Point

On February 18, Lomira boys basketball lost 72-57 to Springs in a game between two teams at the top of the conference standings.
Springs (19-4, 12-1) jumped out to a 14-2 lead over Lomira (14-8, 8-5) before the Lions fought back to get into the game, led by Jackson Goebel’s six consecutive points to get the score to 19-15 in favor of the Ledgers.
Goebel drained a three-pointer for the Lions in the corner at the 7:30 mark in the first half to close the gap on the scoreboard even further to 21-18.
The Ledgers went on to score 11 straight points before Keegan Kell hit a three-pointer at the top of the key to place the score at 32-21 with Springs in the lead.

Springs closed the next nine points before Sam Schraufnagel scored the final four points for Lomira of the first half to make the halftime score 41-25.
Lomira started off the second half with a 14-6 scoring stretch, featuring three-point makes from Kell, Goebel, and Charlie Cole to bring the Lions closer in the game to Springs by the score of 47-39.
The Lions got an old-fashioned three-point play from Schraufnagel, plus three-pointers from Kell and Cole, to get within five points with less than eight minutes left in the game with the score at 53-48.
Lomira got a layup from Goebel to put the score at 53-50 in favor of Springs, which was followed by a 7-2 scoring run with the Ledgers leading 60-52 with 4:40 showing on the game clock.
The Lions got a floater in the lane and a top-of-the-key three-pointer from Goebel to try to get Lomira to pull off a comeback with a score of 65-57 with 1:28 left in the game.
The Ledgers were able to score the final seven points of the game to close out their 72-57 victory, which clinched a share of the conference title for Springs.
Jackson Goebel’s 19 points led the Lions in the conference matchup.
Vs WLA
On February 21, Lomira boys basketball lost 41-32 to Winnebago Lutheran Academy (WLA) in a defensive slugfest.
Lomira’s (14-8, 8-5) defense led the way to get an 8-0 lead over WLA (14-8, 10-3) before the Vikings finally scored seven minutes into the game.
Keegan Kell made his second three-pointer of the game to give the Lions a 12-11 lead after the Vikings’ defense held Lomira without a basket for six minutes of game time.
The Lions got a nice turnaround jumper from Jackson Goebel before WLA went into the locker room with an 18-14 halftime lead.
The Lomira home crowd was treated to the reunion of the 2000 State Qualifier Lomira boys basketball team at halftime.
The game had a defensive feel of those Dick Bennett Badger teams (who are having their own 2000 Final Four team reunion on Saturday), with both teams in a defensive grinder of a game.
The Lions took the lead back at 25-24 after a Hunter Duley spin for a layup and two baskets from Goebel, a three-pointer and a strong finish in the paint.
WLA took control in the final eight minutes of the game to earn a hard-fought 41-32 victory over the Lions.
Lomira was paced by Jackson Goebel’s 13 points on the evening.
At Horicon
On February 24, Lomira boys basketball beat Horicon 68-40 to get back to their winning ways with a road win.
Lomira (15-8) jumped out to a 20-6 lead over Horicon (13-10) thanks to their good team defense and making four three-pointers in the first eight minutes of the game.
The Lions continued their strong play by extending their lead to 32-12 after scoring six straight points, featuring a Keegan Kell three-pointer.
Lomira held a 34-20 halftime lead after Horicon’s Barrett Meyer made two consecutive three-pointers.
Jackson Goebel and Charlie Cole made three-pointers for the Lions early in the second half to extend their lead to 47-23 over the Marshmen.
The Lions scored ten points in a row, highlighted by Jackson Bloohm and Cooper King knocking down threes for Lomira to push the Lions' lead to 55-28 in the second half.
Lomira was able to control the rest of the game to come away with a convincing 68-40 non-conference victory.
Jackson Goebel scored his  1000th career point for the Lions during the contest, and Charlie Cole paced Lomira with 12 points in a game where the Lions made 11 three-pointers.
Lomira boys basketball travels to Omro on February 27 at 7 p.m. to wrap their regular season.
The Lions received the fifth seed in Division 4 of the WIAA tournament and will host 12-seed Necedah on March 4 at 7 p.m.
