On September 11, Lomira football beat Springs 17-0 on Youth Night in a physical, intense Flyway Conference matchup.
Lomira (4-0, 2-0) broke the scoreless tie at 6:57 in the second quarter with a one-yard rushing touchdown by Keegan Kell to take a 7-0 lead over Springs (2-2, 1-1).
The highlight of the scoring drive was an impressive leaping 22-yard run by Hunter Schaumberg near the Lomira sideline, giving the Lions a first and goal at the Ledgers’ seven-yard line.
The Lions’ defense ended the ensuing Springs offensive possession when Alex Zahn soared into the air to bring down a floating pass in the middle of the field to give Lomira back at the Ledgers’ 37-yard line.
“Our defense was light out all night by playing fast and made things difficult every snap,” said Lomira Head Coach Bryan Gregory. “All 11 worked together to execute the game plan, and they set offense up with short fields and turned them over multiple times in key moments.”
Springs’ defense rose to prevent the Lions from scoring any points off the turnover, keeping the score at 7-0 with less than five minutes left in the first half.
Lomira’s Junior Defensive lineman Mason Schelvan ended the first half with a strong pass, resulting in a ten-yard sack to send the Lions to the halftime break with a 7-0 lead over the Ledgers.
The Lomira defense made another big play when Junior Defensive Lineman Cash Agamaite recovered a bad pitch by Springs to give the Lions the ball at the Springs 44-yard line.
“We preached about being tough on both sides of the ball, and we didn’t allow them to score,” said Junior Offensive & Defensive Lineman Cash Agamaite. “We controlled the line of scrimmage during the game, and it was a great game for us.”
The Lions got first downs on an 11-yard rush from Schaumberg and Kell going for 16 yards to get the ball to the Ledgers’ 6-yard line.
Aiden Stoffel knocked through a 23-yard field goal to make it a two-possession game with a 10-0 lead for Lomira at the 5:27 mark in the third quarter.
Lomira’s defense showed its strength again with a three-and-out by the Ledgers, highlighted by an eight-yard sack by Junior Linebacker Jackson Breitlow.
The Lions offense had a time-consuming drive, chewing up eight minutes in the fourth quarter before being stopped at the Ledgers’ three-yard line with just over three minutes left.
Ledgers had their best drive of the game to get into position for a 33-yard field goal attempt, which was blocked by Junior linebacker Cole Geiger and scooped up by Senior Jackson Bloohm, who sprinted down the sideline right in front of the Springs bench for a 74-yard touchdown, sending the Lomira players and crowd into a frenzied celebration.
“That play and moment was electric, with Cole making a huge play to block the field goal, and it was awesome for Jackson to get his big moment and dramatically seal the victory,” said Gregory. “That might be the craziest and loudest moment I’ve seen in Lomira.”
The special teams score gave the Lomira a 17-0 lead with 1:23 remaining on the game clock.
Keegan Kell intercepted the Ledgers’ final attempt, giving the Lomira defense a fitting way to finish their three-straight home shutout with the 17-0 conference win over Springs.
“We have the ultimate home field advantage, with the whole atmosphere and crowd energy fueling us and giving us the edge we need to go out and perform at a high level,” said Gregory. “Great team performance in front of one of the largest and best crowds we’ve had in my time here.”
“Great total team effort in the win by challenging the team all week to come out and match their physicality and intensity,” said Gregory. “We did that and set the tone from the very beginning.
Lomira football will travel to Omro on September 18 at 7 p.m.
