On April 25, Lomira softball lost 2-0 to Mineral Point in a pitching duel in their second game at the Waterloo triangular.
Mineral Point (13-3) broke a scoreless tie in the sixth inning to take a 2-0 lead over Lomira (8-2)
Those two runs proved to be the winning margin in the matchup, where Haleigh Caspary pitched a good game from the pitching circle for a complete game performance with three strikeouts.
Lomira softball beat Waterloo 9-7 to start their day at the Waterloo Triangular.
Lomira’s (8-2) Trista Gassner led off the game with a single, which was followed by a Brianna Frea RBI single and Izzy Wesphal’s sac fly to give the Lions a 2-0 lead over Waterloo (1-6).
Eleanor Collies led off the second inning with a single and was driven in by an RBI single from Ryley Warner to give Lomira a 3-0 lead.
Waterloo responded with one run in the second inning and four runs in the third inning to take a 5-3 lead over the Lions.
Cali Steger’s lead-off double in the fourth inning helped the Lions load the bases with no outs, which resulted in four runs highlighted by a Gassner two-run RBI double to left to give Lomira a 7-5 lead before Waterloo tied the game at seven in the bottom of the fourth inning.
Lomira got a lead-off single from Collies in the fifth to help the Lions score two runs, featuring a Gassner RBI double to give the Lions the winning score of 9-7.
Lily Christian got the win for Lomira after five innings in the circle, and Trista Gassner led the offense with three hits and runs batted in the non-conference win.
At Campbellsport
On April 23, Lomira softball lost 10-9 on the road to Campbellsport in a highly competitive game featuring two very good teams in the Flyway Conference.
Campbellsport (8-3, 4-1) scored two runs in the first inning when the Cougars got the bases loaded with two outs, resulting in Mackenzie Helsell and Peyton Hall scoring to take a 2-0 lead over Lomira (8-2, 4-1).
Lomira responded in the third inning with a three-run home run by Lily Christain over the center field fence with two outs set up by singles from Brianna Frea and Izzy Westphal to give the Lions a 3-2 lead after Christain’s sixth home run of the season.
The Cougars’ offense got going in the bottom of the third inning, starting with a McKenna Loehr RBI single to tie the game at three.
Campbellsport was leading 4-3 with two outs and the bases loaded when the Cougars scored three runs off of a Ava Sabish double to take a 7-3 lead over the Lions.
The Lions scored two runs with the bases loaded in the fourth inning, highlighted by a Frea RBI single to make the score 7-5 in favor of the Cougars.
The Cougars scored three runs in the fifth inning, featuring a two-out double by Loehr to center, driving in two.
Lomira offense loaded the bases in the sixth inning with one out to score three runs thanks to RBI singles by Christian and Haleigh Caspary to close the gap to 10-8 before Olivia McCarty came on to pitch with the Lions having runners on 3rd and 1st base.
McCarty proceeded to get a strikeout to end the Lomira threat in the sixth inning, keeping the Campbellsport lead at 10-8.
Lomira’s Tori Thomas got a leadoff single to start the seventh inning, and Frea hit an RBI double to tighten the game at 10-9 in favor of Campbellsport.
Campbellsport’s McCarty got another strikeout from the pitching circle to secure the 10-9 win in the high-scoring and entertaining softball game.
Lily Christian led the offense with four runs batted in the conference matchup.
At Omro
On April 21, Lomira softball beat Omro 26-5 in five innings on the road in their Flyway Conference matchup.
Lomira (8-2, 4-1) exploded for four runs in the first inning, featuring RBI doubles from Brianna Frea to center and Izzy Westphal to left, followed by an Addy Behnke RBI single for a 4-0 lead over Omro (3-6, 0-3).
The Lions’ powerful offense continued in the second inning, highlighted by a RBI double from Trista Gassner, Lily Christian’s two-run home run over the left field fence, and a triple RBI from Tori Thomas to push Lomira’s lead to 11-0 after two innings.
Lomira got another strong inning of offense in the fourth by scoring eight more runs against Foxes, thanks to RBi singles from Cali Steger, McKenna Casper, and Kennedy Goebel before Haleigh Caspary capped off the explosive inning with a three-run home run that sailed above the center field wall to give the Lions a 19-0 lead over Omro.
Omro scored five runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to extend the game to give Lomira’s offense another opportunity to score more runs in the game.
Christian crushed a grand slam, giving her the second home run of the game and the fifth home run in the first seven games when the ball field left the field to give Lomira a commanding 23-5.
Lomira’s Thomas drove in two more runs and scored the final run to make the final score 26-5 for the conference road victory.
Lomira softball hosted Mayville on April 28 after print time. The Lions will travel to WLA on April 30 and will host NFDL on May 4, with first pitch scheduled for 5 p.m. for both games.
