Posted

On March 7, Lomira boys basketball defeated the fourth-seeded Markesan 88-60 to advance to sectionals for the second straight season to play third-seeded Pardeeville on March 11.
Lomira (25-1) sprinted out to a 15-3 lead over Markesan (18-7), highlighted by five points from Keegan Kell and capped off by a two-hand thunderous dunk from Jake Broeske, which sent the Lomira home crowd into a frenzied state.
Charlie Cole and Blake Steger each scored seven points over the next four minutes to help propel the Lions to a 30-18 lead before the Hornets scored five straight points to close the gap on the scoreboard to 30-23 with 7:14 left in the first half.
Broeske scored two baskets for Lomira, making the score 34-27 when Kell calmly made two consecutive three-pointers and Maddox Bodden scored four points before freshman Hunter Schaumberg converted a fastbreak layup right before the halftime buzzer to give the Lions a 46-29 halftime lead.

Lomira’s Jackson Bloohm scored six points, featuring an offensive rebound finish, fast break layup, and a nice drive finished with a spinning reversal to give the Lions a 56-41 lead at the 12:18 mark in the second half.
The Lions got a steal from Hunter Duley, which led to a powerful two-handed dunk from Broeske, resulting in a foul on Markesan and a double technical foul on Broeske and Markesan’s backup post, giving Lomira a 64-45 lead over the Hornets with less than 10 minutes left in the game.
Lomira kept on pouring it on the offense end with Bodden scoring six more points and Cooper King knocking down a three-pointer to help the Lions close out their impressive 88-60 tournament win to set up the opportunity to play Pardeeville in the tournament for the second year in a row after ending the Bulldogs season last year in the Regional Final.
Keegan Kell’s 15 points, with Jake Broeske and Jackson Bloohm each scoring 13 points, led the way with six players scoring in double figures in the win, sending the huge home crowd of Lions fans happy from the Lions Den.
‘It feels good to win the regional championship, but we don’t want to be complacent with what we have accomplished already,” said Senior Point Guard Hunter Duley. “Playing in front of the fans makes the energy on the court way higher. Thanks to the community for the support, and we ask the fans to keep supporting.”
‘It feels great to complete another goal that we had this season by playing really well as a team in both games, but we still have a lot ahead of us, and I think these games are a step in the right direction,” said Senior Center Jake Broeske. “The community has supported us the whole season, and on Saturday, it was top-notch. Seeing the whole community show up to cheer us on is really special and it feels great to repay them with a win.”
“To win the regional championship in my first year was awesome,” said Head Coach Nick Kohler. “It was a great atmosphere, and glad our seniors were able to win their last home game.”
“Thought it was one of our best defensive efforts, with the team defense being what I was most proud of,” said Kohler. “We have a lot of guys that can hurt you on offense which come playoff time is a blessing.”
Vs Nekossa
On March 6, the Lomira boys basketball team won 77-33 over ninth-seeded Nekoosa in a convincing second-round victory at home in the WIAA Division Four Tournament.
Number One Seed Lomira (25-1) showed why the Lions are a top team with their aggressive defense led by Blake Steger and Hunter Duley, including Jake Broeske protecting the paint with a blocked shot early to set the tone, combined with their efficient offense by taking a 25-0 lead over Nekoosa (6-19) featuring ten points from Jackson Bloohm and six points from Broeske.
The papermakers finally made two free throws at the 6:14 mark and then knocked down their first shot of the game with 5:09 left in the first half, which was a testament to Lomira’s defensive efforts to put the score at 32-7 in favor of the Lions.
Steger scored six consecutive points with two of the baskets coming on a fastbreak runout for the Lions to help them take a 42-12 lead into the halftime break.
