A packed gym welcomed conference rivals Thursday night as Mayville honored its seniors and parents before tipoff against first-place Lomira.
The Lions entered the matchup at 22-1 overall and a perfect 14-0 in conference play, while the Cardinals came in at (13-9, 10-4). Mayville matched Lomira’s intensity early, keeping the game tight throughout a competitive first half. The Cardinals battled on the glass and found timely buckets to stay within striking distance, trailing just 36-32 at halftime.
The momentum shifted after the break.
Senior leaders Tate Drinkwine and Talan Meyer were limited by foul trouble in the second half, disrupting Mayville’s rhythm on both ends of the floor. Lomira took advantage, turning defensive stops into transition points and gradually extending its lead.
What had been a four-point game at halftime turned into an 83-59 final as the Lions pulled away over the final 12 minutes.
Despite the outcome, the night carried special meaning as Mayville recognized its senior class in front of a standing-room-only crowd. The Cardinals now turn their focus to postseason play.
Mayville enters WIAA regional action as the No. 9 seed and will travel to No. 8 seed Evansville on Tuesday, March 3, looking to extend its season.
