Lions Get Two Wins as Christian Breaks Scoring Record

On Feb 16, Lomira girls basketball lost 51-49 to Waupun at home in a non-conference matchup as Josie Christian became the program’s all-time scoring leader in her sophomore year.
Waupun (9-14) jumped out to a 7-0 lead over Lomira (17-6) before Lily Christian hit a three-pointer from the wing, then Josie Christian stole the ball for a basket to tie the girls scoing record of Julie Benter’s 1170 points set in 1993.
J. Christian broke the scoring record on a free throw during a stretch of scoring five points for the Lions to tighten up the game at 11-10 with Waupun in the lead.
Waupun was leading 16-10 before Lomira scored seven consecutive points, highlighted by a J. Christian step-back jumper and a Whitney Witkowski three-pointer to give the Lions a 17-16 lead.

The Warriors outscored the Lions 11-6 during the rest of the first half to take a 27-23 lead into the halftime break.
J. Christian scored six early second-half points, and L. Christian knocked down another three-pointer to make the game a one-point game at 33-32 before Waupun went on a 10-0 scoring stretch to take a 43-32 lead with 9:40 left on the game clock.
The Lons responded with a 9-0 scoring run with four points from Kennedy Goebel and capped off by a three-pointer from senior Olivia Marshall to make it a one-possession game at 43-41.
Goebel and J. Christian scored back-to-back baskets to put the score at 47-46 with 2:22 left in the game before the Warriors scored on a free throw for a 48-46 lead.
L.Christian made her third three-pointer of the game, which she celebrated with a fist pump in the air to give the Lions a 49-48 lead with 1:07 left in the second half.
Waupun tied the game at 49 with 50 seconds left before the Warriors blocked a J. Christian shot and caused a Marshall three-point miss with less than 25 seconds left in the game.
The Warriors scored a basket with 14.9 seconds on the game clock to take a 51-49 lead, and the Lions called a timeout with 3.9 seconds left to set up the final play.
Lomira got a good look with a step-back jumper from J. Christian on the final play, but the jumper bounced off the rim, giving Waupun a 51-49 win on Senior Night for Oelsyea Olig, Olivia Marshall, and Rachel Chervenka.
Josie Christian led the way with 23 points for Lomira as she became the program’s all-time leading scorer in the regular-season home finale for the Lions.
At WLA
On Feb 13, Lomira girls’ basketball beat Winnebago Lutheran 59-50 on the road in their Flyway conference matchup.
Lomira (17-6, 9-4) took a 7-5 lead over WLA (10-12, 6-7) when Lily Christian banked a three-pointer off the glass for the Lions.
WLA was leading 14-11 when the Lions went on a 10-0 scoring run featuring three-pointers from Kennedy Goebel and Josie Christian to take a 21-14 lead over the Vikings.
The Vikings scored three points before J. Christian scored four straight points, including a nice breakaway layup off a steal, and L. Christian knocked down a three to give Lomira a 28-22 lead.
WLA closed the half on an 11-0 scoring stretch to get a 33-28 lead into the halftime break over the Lions.
The Lions went on a three-point shooting burst with Goebel, J. Christian, and Whitney Witkowski hitting one apiece to give Lomira a 37-34 lead over the Vikings.
The score was tied at 39 when J. Christian took over the game by scoring seven straight points, highlighted by a step-back three-pointer for Lomira.
L. Christian proved the bank was still open on Friday night with her third made a three off the bench, plus Brianna Frea knocking down a three in the corner to finish off an impressive 13 straight points stretch for the Lions, ending in a 52-39 lead.
The Vikings scored six consecutive points before J. Christian showed off more of her offensive skill with her patented step back jumper just in front of the three-point line, which rolled in to give Lomira a 54-45 lead with less than two minutes left in the game.
Lomira converted their free throws in the last minute of the game to secure a 59-50 road win.
Josie Christian led the way with the 27 points and Lily Christian scored 12 points for the Lions in the conference contest.
Vs NFDL
On Feb 10, the Lomira girls’ basketball team defeated NFDL 57-35 at home in a Flyway Conference game between two of the best teams in the conference.
Lomira (17-5, 9-4) jumped out to a 13-3 lead over NFDL (16-6, 9-4), highlighted by six points from Kennedy Goebel and five points from Jadalee Luedtke.
The Orioles went on a 9-0 scoring run before Luedtke scored four more points to give the Lions a 17-14 lead, but then NFDL scored four consecutive points to take an 18-17 lead over Lomira.
The Lions finished the half on 8-0 run featuring four points from Lily Christian and baskets from Luedtke and Goebel to take a 25-18 halftime lead over the visiting Orioles.
Lomira got two three-pointers from sophomore star Josie Christian to help push its lead to 37-22 early in the second half.
The Lions were leading the game 39-26 when Lomira went on an impressive 14-0 scoring run, thanks to L.Christian scoring eight points, including two three-pointers, to put the game away for the Lions with a score of 53-26 over NFDL.
Lomira secured the 57-35 victory to cause a two-way tie for second place with NFDL, with matching records of 8-4 in the Flyway.
Jadalee Luedtke led the way with 16 points, and the trio of Lily Christian, Josie Christian, and Kennedy Goebel each scored 12 points in the contest.
Lomira girls basketball ends its regular season at Springs on Feb. 19 at 7 p.m.
The Lions received a three-seed and a first-round bye in the WIAA Girls Basketball Tournament in Division four. Lomira will play the winner of WLA/Cedar Grove’Belgium in the second round at home on Feb. 27.
