On Jan. 30, Lomira boys’ basketball defeated Laconia 60-57 in a highly competitive matchup in the Flyway conference.
Lomira (15-1, 8-0) held a 10-9 lead over Laconia (7-9, 4-4), highlighted by two three-pointers from Maddox Bodden and two baskets in the paint from Jake Broeske.
Laconia was ahead 16-12 when Hunter Duley knocked down a three-pointer, and Blake Steger made a layup to tie the game at 17.
The Spartans finished the first half on a 9-4 scoring stretch to take a 26-21 halftime lead over the Lions.
Broeske made his free throw to finish off a three-point play for Lomira to close the gap at 31-28, but Laconia scored five straight points to push the lead back to eight points at 36-28.
Cooper King scored six points off the bench to help Lomira get closer on the scoreboard at 38-36.
Lomira got another three-point play from Broeske’s finish in the paint and the line to tie the game at 39 points apiece for both teams.
Cash Farrell scored four points for the Spartans, and King had a three-pointer roll into the hoop for Lomira, putting the score at 43-42 in favor of Laconia with seven minutes left in the game in this back-and-forth game.
Lomira got back-to-back baskets from Steger and Broeske to retake the lead at 46-43 before Laconia’s eight consecutive points, including five points from Farrell, to give the lead back to the Spartans at 51-46 with 2:22 left on the game clock.
King continued his strong second half by scoring the next six points for the Lions to regain the lead at 52-51 with 1:40 left in regulation, but this game of many twists and turns had another when the Spartans knocked down a three from the corner to take back the lead at 54-52 at the 1:24 mark of the second half.
Lomira found their second-half shooting star when King knocked down a three-pointer from the corner in front of the Lomira bench, sending the home crowd into a frenzied state and giving the Lions a 55-54 lead.
“Cooper works extremely hard and embraced the opportunity,” said Head Coach Nick Kohler. “He is a guy that would start on a lot of our conference teams, but embraces his role.”
Laconia missed a three-pointer with 45 seconds left, which led to King making two big free throws for Lomira with 32.4 seconds left in this conference matchup to give the Lions a 57-54 lead.
The Spartans’ Mason Langenfeld scored a tough basket in the lane and was sent to the free-throw line with 16.5 seconds left with an opportunity to tie the game.
Langenfeld missed the free throw, but the Lions were called for a lane violation, giving the Spartans another opportunity to tie the game.
Laconia’s Langenfield was able to make the second-chance free throw to tie the game at 57.
The Lions went to their big man on their final possession, and Broeske came through by converting his offensive rebound into two points plus being fouled, which he made to finish off his third three-point play of the game to give Lomira a 60-57 lead with 5.5 seconds left in this highly competitive game.
The Spartans would get one final opportunity to tie the game, but Farrell’s three-pointer from the corner didn’t find its way into the net, giving Lomira a hard-fought 60-57 conference win.
Laconia was led by Cash Farrell’s 23 points in the matchup with the Lions’ Broeske providing 21 points and 13 rebounds for Lomira.
Cooper King scored 20 points in an impressive second-half performance to help the Lions in the conference win.
“It shows our depth, and we knew it was going to be a grind-it-out game because Laconia is a really good team,” said Kohler. “We made some shots down the stretch and are glad we found a way.”
Vs Oakfield
On Jan. 27, Lomira boys basketball beat Oakfield 67-51 at the Lions Den in a game featuring two ranked teams.
Lomira (15-1) jumped out to a 7-0 lead over Oakfield (11-3), featuring five points from Charlie Cole, including a three-pointer, and a big block from Jake Broeske against the Oaks’ Big Man Bo Bijl.
“A fast start has been a focal point in practice and pregame,” said Head Coach Nick Kohler. “I am proud that we executed early in the game.”
The Lions continued their strong start with two baskets from Broeske and a three-pointer from Cole to extend their lead to 14-5 before Oakfield got two three-pointers from Xavier Mielke, tightening the game to 14-11 with less than 11 minutes left in the first half.
Oakfield closed the gap to 16-14 before the Lions went on a 9-0 scoring run, highlighted by a Cole three-pointer and two finishes in the post by Broeske to push their lead to 25-14.
“We knew this type of performance was coming. Charlie is one of the best shooters I have ever coached,” said Kohler.
The Oaks went on to score six straight points with four of those points coming from Brayden Glugla before the Lions went on another 9-0 scoring run again featuring a Cole three-pointer to take a 34-20 lead.

The Lions closed out the last eight minutes on a 15-6 scoring stretch featuring a Broeske old-fashioned play, and Cole knocked down his fifth three-pointer of the game to walk away with a 67-51 win for the home team.
“We have had times this year where we go on runs and allow them to go on a run,” said Kohler. “I was glad that we maintained the run for the last eight minutes.”
Lomira was led by Jake Broeske with 20 points, and Charlie Cole added 19 points in the non-conference win.
“I thought Jake played extremely well with being physical and dominant in the paint,” said Kohler.
