On September 25, Lomira football won 28-13 over Laconia in a homecoming game in the Flyway Conference.
Lomira (6-0, 4-0) got on the scoreboard first when Sophomore Running Back Hunter Schaumberg scored a three-yard rushing touchdown with 6:26 in the first quarter to give the Lions a 7-0 lead over Laconia (3-3, 2-2).
The Spartans responded with a 75-yard scoring drive capped off by Quarterback Asher Morgan scoring a two-yard rushing touchdown to tie the score at seven at the 11:52 mark in the second quarter.
The Lions were stopped on fourth down at the Spartans’ 33-yard line and 26-yard line on their next two offensive drives, keeping the score at 7–7 at halftime.
Lomira’s Cleary Twohig recovered the onside kick from Laconia to start the second half, but Spartans’ Tillman Madigan intercepted the Lions on the first offensive play of the third quarter and returned it for a touchdown, giving Laconia a 13-7 lead over Lomira.
Lomira drove 72 yards to retake the lead at 14-13 when Schaumberg scored on an 11-yard rushing touchdown at the 6:35 mark in the third quarter.
Alex Zahn made a diving interception on the first play of the Spartans’ ensuing possession, giving the Lions back their own 48-yard line.
“The defense again made life difficult for our opponent most of the night by taking away the run game, forcing them into throwing more than they wanted to,” said Lomira Head Coach Bryan Gregory. “Forced turnovers set us up with great field position on multiple occasions.”
The Lions took advantage of the turnover by increasing their lead to 21-13 on Schaumberg’s third rushing touchdown, scoring on a five-yard run with 11:45 remaining in the game.
Laconia’s defense got the ball back on an interception by Finnley Frank, but the Lions’ defense rose to the occasion, highlighted by Senior Defensive Back Jackson Bloohm breaking up three passes to stop the Spartans on fourth down on Lomira’s 20-yard line.
“Our team played hard and really picked it up in the second half; our defense allowed only one touchdown,” said Lomira Senior Jackson Bloohm. “I was trying to help the team win by flying around making plays.”
“Jackson made big plays all year and none more important than the performance he put on Friday night,” said Gregory. “He’s a great athlete and is always in great position. He stepped up when his team needed him the most in key situations.”
Schaumberg (260 rushing yards) went up the gut of the defense and sprinted away into the fall night for a 76-yard rushing touchdown, giving him four touchdowns in the game and giving the Lions a 28-13 lead with 2:59 left in the fourth quarter.
“Hunter chose a great time to have arguably his best high school game of his young career,” said Gregory. “By showcasing his full skill set with patience, balance, vision, speed, and physical running, all came into play, which he made big play after big play when we needed it most.”
“The offensive line played well as a unit and was extremely physical as the game went on,” said Gregory. “This is a group that we will continue to rely heavily on and a group that just keeps getting better and more comfortable as the season goes on.”
The Spartans’ last offensive possession ended when Schaumberg intercepted a pass in the end zone for Lomira, giving the Lions a 28-13 conference win and improving to 6-0 on the season.
“I’m really pleased with how we came out and competed against Lomira because they are a really good team, and I think it was a big step forward for our program,” said Laconia Head Coach Chris Morgan. “This was the kind of toughness and resilience that I have been waiting to see from our team against a quality opponent.”
“The first half came down to execution and overall intensity because we didn’t play up to our potential and the standard we expect of ourselves,” said Gregory. “I thought we played well in the second half and controlled the line of scrimmage on both sides. That was the team I know we can be, and that is the intensity we need to play at for all four quarters.”
Lomira will travel to NFDL on October 2 at 7 p.m.
