On September 4, Lomira football beat Campbellsport 27-16 on the road in their Flyway Conference Opener to keep the Rivalry Axe Trophy.
Lomira (3-0, 1-0) scored a touchdown on their opening drive of the game with a one-yard rushing touchdown from Hunter Schaumberg at the 7:58 mark in the first quarter, giving the Lions a 7-0 lead over Campbellsport (0-3, 0-1).
Campbellsport’s offense drove 42 yards on their opening drive before Elijah James recovered a fumble for the Lions, ending the Cougars' drive at the Lomira 38-yard line.
The Cougars’ defense returned the favor, stopping Lomira on fourth down at the Cougars' 24-yard line thanks to a combined tackle by Keagen Sabish and Austin Grahl.
Lomira defense forced a three-and-out from the Cougars thanks to a sack by Mason Schelvan.
The Lions converted a third-and-long to get inside the five-yard line when Kell found Brenden Steinke on a 28-yard pass play.
Lomira scored on the final play of the first half when Keegan Kell found Alex Zahn in the front corner of the end zone for a four-yard passing touchdown, giving the Lions a 13-0 halftime lead.
Campbellsport got on the scoreboard in the third quarter when Cullan Flasch sprinted down the sideline in front of the Cougars for a 47-yard rushing touchdown, and Jackson Straub found Levi Bentz on a contested two-point conversion pass, closing the gap to 13-8 in favor of Lomira.
It was the first points the Lions had allowed in the first ten quarters of the 2026 football season.

Lomira’s defense forced a three-and-out, giving the ball back to their offense, and the Lions pushed their lead to 27-8 with 6:54 left in the game on a James three-yard rushing touchdown.
“I thought we responded nicely on the offensive side of the ball in the second half,” said Lomira Head Coach Bryan Gregory. “We were able to create some positive momentum and put some decent drives together.”
The Cougars’ freshman Damien Braund burst down the field for an exciting 83-yard kickoff return, and Braund finished off the drive with a 12-yard rushing touchdown with 4:59 remaining in the game.
Carter Gellings converted the two-point run, putting the score at 27-16 in favor of the visiting Lions.
The rivalry game ended on a somber note when a Lomira player suffered a serious ankle injury, with an ambulance coming onto the field after both coaches agreed to end the game with 4:54 remaining, for a Lomira 27-16 conference victory.
“We knew this was going to be a dogfight, and we knew we were going to get Campbellsport’s best shot with rivalry and Axe on the line,” said Gregory. “We’re 3-0 and positioned exactly where we wanted to be heading into Week Four.
Lomira football will host Springs, and Campbellsport football will travel to WLA, with both games on September 11 at 7 p.m.
