Posted

On Feb. 6, Lomira boys basketball beat Winnebago Lutheran Academy 67-61 on the road in a competitive Flyway conference matchup.
Lomira (17-1, 9-0) got out to an 8-5 lead over WLA (9-9, 4-5), highlighted by a three-pointer from Keegan Kell and a three-point play from Jake Broeske.
WLA’s three-point shooting gave the Vikings a 13-12 lead before the Lions went on a 12-0 scoring run featuring three-pointers from Kell and Cooper King to give Lomira a 24-13 lead over WLA.
Kell made his third three-pointer of the first half to give Lomira a 27-16 before the Vikings’ hot three-point shooting returned, with the Vikings knocking down four three-pointers, three of them from Isaac LaMotte, to tighten up the game at 31-28.

Blake Steger scored in the lane before the Vikings’ Hudson Henry hit a three-pointer at the halftime buzzer to put the score at 33-32 in favor of the Lions.
Gannan Schwartz scored for WLA to tie the game at 35 when the Lions scored seven consecutive points featuring a Kell three-pointer and four points from Steger for Lomira to take the lead back at 42-35.
Broeske showed off his shooting range by splashing down two deep three-pointers, and Jackson Bloohm scored on a fast break to extend the Lomira lead to 50-39.
The Vikings kept coming back with the score at 52-49, but the Lions got a spinning Bloohm finished for a basket and Kell knocked down his fifth three-pointer of the game to push the Lomira lead to 57-49.
LaMotte hit his sixth three-pointer of the game for the Vikings to make it one possession game at 57-54.
WLA got a fourth three-pointer from Henry with one minute left in the game, putting the score at 62-59.
Steger made a free throw to give Lomira a 63-59 lead when Steger made a bigger play on the defensive end, blocking a WLA three-point shot.
Schwartz made two free throws for WLA with 22 seconds to make the score 63-61 before Bloohm and Broeske made two free throws apiece to seal a 67-61 road victory for the Lions.
Jake Broeske recorded a double-double with 23 points and 10 rebounds, with Keegan Kell adding 17 points and Blake Steger scoring 15 points in the conference matchup.
Vs Xavier
On Feb. 3, Lomira boys basketball defeated Xavier 100-94 in double overtime for an instant classic between two very good high school teams in their non-conference matchup.
Lomira (17-1) held a 15-11 first-half lead over Xavier (11-6) in a game that would feature many turns and twists.
Hunter Duley hit a three-pointer in the corner to give the Lions a 33-31 lead over Xavier, which helped Lomira take a 35-31 lead into the halftime break.
Xavier’s Logan Ramcyzk scored five straight points, including a three-pointer, to give the Hawks a 43-39 lead over the Lions.
The Lions got a three-pointer from senior Jake Broeske, and junior Coope King knocked down two deep shots to tie the game at 50.
Ramcyzk knocked down a three and then stole the ball, which he converted into a fastbreak layup to finish off a 19-7 scoring stretch of basketball, giving Xavier a 69-57 lead over the Lions.
King and Charlie Cole drained threes for the Lions before Broekse finished strong in the post to cut the Hawks’ lead to 72-67 with 1:40 left in regulation.
Lomira was trailing 72-68 when Cole deflected a Hawks pass into Broeske’s hands, which allowed the Lions to move the ball up the court, and King made a key three-pointer to trim the Xavier lead down to one at 72-71 with 50 seconds left in the game.
Xavier got two free throws from Ramczyk to push their lead back to 74-71 with 35 seconds left on the clock.
Jackson Bloohm drove the ball into the lane and kicked out to King, who knocked down a contested three-point shot from the left wing to tie the game at 74 with 22 seconds left in regulation between these explosive teams.
The Hawks would get one final opportunity to win the game after a timeout with 12 seconds left, but on a hard drive, Ramczyk slipped to fall out of bounds with 2.5 seconds left in the game.
Lomira had a half-court heave before the final buzzer that fell short to send the teams into overtime with the game tied at 74.
King’s hot shooting continued with his sixth three-pointer since halftime in the corner, assisted by another good pass by Bloohm to give the Lions a 77-74 lead.
“Cooper took advantage of the opportunity and is becoming a guy we can lean on when we need a big shot,” said Head Coach Nick Kohler.
Blake Steger made a basket before Ramczyk knocked his seventh three-pointer of the game to make the score 79-78 in favor of the Lions.
The teams were tied at 81 when Cole made a three-pointer for the Lions with 1:20 left in overtime to give Lomira an 84-81 lead, but Ramczyk was fouled on a three-pointer, which he converted into three free throws to tie the game back at 84.
King blocked a Hawks three-point attempt with five seconds left in the first overtime, and then Xavier missed a jumper to send the game into a second overtime.
Bloohm and Steger scored back-to-back baskets for the Lions to give Lomira an 88-84 lead, but Xavier responded with more points to make the score 88-87.
“Jackson has been a difference maker with being one of our best defenders and rebounders,” said Kohler. “Glad he was able to show his scoring side.”
Then Broeske made school history by scoring in the post to break the school’s all-time scoring record with his 1157 career point breaking Steve Sterr’s sixty-year-old record, but more importantly, giving the Lions a 90-87 lead
“It has always been a goal of mine, and at the moment I didn’t even realize it because of how intense the game was,” said Jake Broeske. “It was such an awesome moment, and it was great to achieve the record during a great win.”
“Very happy for him from what I have learned, the senior class changed the culture in Lomira, and for Jake to get this record, I think he is very deserving,” said Kohler.
Broeske converted an old-fashioned three-point play to give the Lions a 94-90 lead, but Ramczyk was fouled again on a three-point shot for the Hawks.
Ramczyk made two of his three free throws to cut the Lomira lead to 94-92 with one minute left in double overtime.
Lomira was able to make their free throws and make defensive stops to close out the thrilling 100-94 double overtime win over the Hawks.
Xavier was led by Logan Ramczyk, 41 points, who has Lomira ties with his mom (Leigh) being a Lomira alum and his grandparents (Mike and Monica Haefs) living in Lomira.
The Lions were led by Jake Broeske with 27 points and 13 rebounds, plus Jackson Bloohm scoring 23 points and Cooper King scoring 22 points (second straight game scoring 20 points after halftime).
“Huge win for the team and extremely proud how we fought,” said Kohler. “That was a sectional-like game that will prepare us for the postseason.”
Lomira boys basketball hosted NFDL on Feb. 10 after print time, and then the Lions will travel to Omro on Feb. 12 at 7 p.m.
